HEC also requires a €6,000 confirmation deposit, non-refundable but deducted from tuition fees, payable within two weeks of the announcement of the final results (source: hec.edu, Fees and Financing page, accessed 8 October 2026).
  • HEC Paris, admitted student profile: median GMAT of 715, 90% international students and an average starting salary of €103,000, according to the school’s 2025 employment report; 100% of graduates employed after graduation and €169,000 three years after graduation, according to the 2024 Financial Times ranking. HEC also claims the title of world No. 1 in the QS 2027 ranking of Masters in Finance (source: hec.edu, programme page, accessed 8 October 2026).
  • LSE, MSc Finance (full-time, 10 months): £53,600 for students starting in 2027/28, the same fee for UK and international students. The GMAT or GRE is required for all applicants without a UK degree (the GMAT is strongly preferred) and recommended for UK degree holders whose application does not demonstrate their quantitative ability. A non-refundable deposit of 15% of the fees is paid in two instalments: 10% within 28 days of an offer received before 30 April 2027, then 5% by 1 June 2027; for offers received from 1 May 2027 onwards, both instalments are due together, within 21 days in May, 14 days in June, 7 days in July and 3 days in August (source: lse.ac.uk, accessed 8 October 2026).
  • LSE, timeline: there is no fixed deadline: applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and applications close as soon as the class is full. LSE’s deadline for need-based financial support, however, is 22 April 2027, and you must already hold an offer to apply. The pre-sessional course, compulsory and full-time for four weeks, starts in August 2027 (source: lse.ac.uk, accessed 8 October 2026).
  • Examples of students we have supported: see our Master’s results. This selection is not a complete record by year or by programme.

Readily available, they always responded quickly to my requests and questions and always managed to find a solution suited to my needs, such as contacts at universities or English lessons.

Understanding the Master in Finance before you apply

What an MiF really is, how it differs from the Master in Management, which schools top the rankings, what admission requires and which careers it leads to.

What is a Master in Finance (MiF)?

The Master in Finance is a specialized master’s-level degree in finance, offered by leading business schools and universities worldwide. It lasts one to two years and comes in two formats: “pre-experience”, for students early in their studies, and “post-experience”, for candidates who have already worked for a few years. The curriculum covers corporate finance, capital markets, asset management and financial analysis, and increasingly data and fintech. Most programmes include an internship, projects with partner companies and a strong international dimension.

Master in Finance or Master in Management: which should you choose?

The Master in Management is a generalist degree: it covers every business function and lets you choose a specialization later. The Master in Finance, by contrast, is aimed at candidates who have already decided on a career in finance: the curriculum is more technical (valuation, financial modelling, econometrics, derivatives), and recruitment by investment banks and funds is more direct. If you are still weighing several sectors, the MiM gives you more flexibility; if finance is the obvious choice for you, the MiF is the fastest route.

At a glance

Master in Management

Generalist

  • Covers every business function.
  • Specialization comes later.
  • The right choice if you are still weighing several sectors.

Master in Finance

Specialized

  • More technical: valuation, financial modelling, econometrics, derivatives.
  • More direct recruitment by investment banks and funds.
  • The right choice if you already know finance is for you.

In short:the MiM buys you flexibility, the MiF buys you speed. If your career plans are settled, the MiF gets you there faster.

What are the best Masters in Finance?

French schools have historically dominated the top of the Financial Times Masters in Finance ranking: HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, EDHEC and emlyon regularly appear among the leaders. Elsewhere, London Business School, LSE, Imperial College, Oxford (Saïd), Bocconi, ESADE, IE and the University of St. Gallen are among the benchmark programs. In the United States, MIT Sloan is the top-ranked American school in the FT 2026 Masters in Finance ranking, ranked 25th worldwide, ahead of Fordham (Gabelli, 40th) and McCombs (University of Texas at Austin, 49th); Princeton, Yale SOM, Columbia and NYU Stern also offer highly selective finance master’s programs, often focused on quantitative finance or asset management. The “best” program depends on your goals: markets or corporate finance, target sector, where you want to build your career, and budget. Our coaching helps you build a list of schools that fits your profile and ambitions.

How do you get into a Master in Finance?

Admission is based on a complete application: transcripts, CV, essays and letters of recommendation. A solid quantitative background (mathematics, statistics) is expected, and most programs require a competitive GMAT or GRE score, as well as an English test (TOEFL or IELTS) for programs taught in English. The most selective schools add an admissions interview, and some North American programs require a WES or ECE evaluation of your degrees (allow 3 to 4 weeks). Applications usually open in the fall, in successive rounds: applying in the earliest rounds, from October, significantly improves your chances of admission and of securing a scholarship.

What is a Master in Finance?

A specialized master’s degree in finance, usually lasting one year or eighteen months, geared toward careers in capital markets, corporate finance and asset management. It is more technical and more focused than a Master in Management.

Master in Finance or Master in Management: which should you choose?

Choose the MiF if your career plans are already clearly focused on finance, and the MiM if you want to keep your options open. The MiF closes some doors in exchange for a clearer profile with recruiters in the sector, a trade-off we discuss openly with you before building your list of schools.

What level of math is expected?

The most quantitative programs expect a solid grounding in mathematics and statistics, and some assess it explicitly in the application or in the interview. The required level varies widely from one program to another, which is why it is part of the targeting process.

Do you need a finance bachelor’s degree to apply?

No, but a quantitative background is essential. Programs admit students with backgrounds in economics, business, mathematics or engineering. What matters is strong results in quantitative subjects and a demonstrated interest in finance (internships, projects, certifications).

Is the GMAT required for a Master in Finance?

It depends on the school: many require the GMAT or GRE, some also accept the Tage Mage or waive the requirement for applicants with outstanding academic records. A strong score remains a decisive advantage at the most selective programs, and it often determines scholarship eligibility.

When should you start preparing?

Ideally 9 to 12 months before your intended start date: enough time to prepare for the GMAT or GRE, build your list of programs, write your essays and secure your recommendations. The first application rounds open as early as October for the following academic year.

What does your coaching include?

Comprehensive, tailored coaching: strategy and program selection, a backward-planned timeline, GMAT or GRE preparation, essay and CV writing, recommendation letters and interview preparation, with unlimited rounds of feedback from our team.

How much does the coaching cost?

Admissions coaching starts at €3,000. The unlimited package (unlimited applications throughout the season, unlimited interview preparation and 10 hours of preparation for the required test) is priced on request, after a free initial consultation. Full details of our packages are on our pricing page.

What does the Admission Guarantee cover?

If you are not admitted to any of the 5 top-choice universities agreed at the start of the coaching, we will support you through a new application in the following cycle. We finalize this list with you during the strategy phase, so the commitment is clear on both sides.

How much does a Master in Finance cost at the top schools?

Expect to pay €48,485 for the Master in International Finance at HEC Paris in 2027/2028, plus €2,500 if you are not a national of France, the European Union or an Erasmus+ associated country, and £53,600 for the MSc Finance at LSE in 2027/28, excluding accommodation. HEC estimates living costs at around €1,500 per month and requires a €6,000 confirmation deposit, deducted from tuition fees and payable within two weeks of final results. Sources: hec.edu and lse.ac.uk, accessed October 8, 2026. On its program page, HEC Paris states that it is ranked No. 1 worldwide for its Master in International Finance in the QS 2027 rankings (hec.edu, accessed October 8, 2026): see also our analysis of the QS 2027 Masters in Finance ranking.

What GMAT score should you aim for when applying to a Master in Finance?

The median GMAT score of admitted students at HEC for the Master in International Finance is 715, according to the school’s 2025 graduate survey. At LSE, the GMAT or GRE is required for applicants without a UK degree, with a strong preference for the GMAT and no published minimum score; it is also recommended for UK degree holders whose application does not demonstrate their quantitative ability. A high score can offset a less quantitative background. Sources: hec.edu and lse.ac.uk, accessed October 8, 2026.

When do Master in Finance applications close?

LSE has no fixed deadline: applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and admissions close once the class is full, often well before the summer. For the school’s need-based financial aid, the deadline is April 22, 2027, and you must already hold an offer. We recommend applying between October and January.
