MIT excels in virtually every STEM field, but its most renowned programs are:

Engineering and Science

Ranked #1 in the world for engineering, computer science, materials science, physics and mathematics. MIT offers a unique education that combines theoretical rigor with hands-on projects through UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program), which lets even first-year students take part in cutting-edge research.

MIT Sloan School of Management

One of the world’s top business schools, particularly known for its MBA focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. The Sloan MBA attracts highly technical candidates and trains the future leaders of the tech industry.

Architecture and Urban Planning

The MIT School of Architecture and Planning is a world leader in computational design, sustainable urban planning and building technology.

Political Science and Economics

MIT’s Department of Economics is ranked among the top 5 in the world. Several winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics have taught or studied there.

Admissions process

Massachusetts Institute of Technol

Admission to MIT is extremely competitive. The process is need-blind for all applicants, including international students: MIT is one of a handful of US universities that never consider your ability to pay and then meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. For your family, this changes everything: your application is judged on its merits, not on your budget.

Evaluation criteria:

MIT assesses applicants on four dimensions: academic excellence (grades and the rigor of your coursework), creativity and personal projects (research, competitions, inventions), community impact (leadership, involvement), and fit with MIT’s culture (collaboration, curiosity, pragmatism).

Required documents: an application through MIT’s own portal (apply.mitadmissions.org), SAT/ACT scores (optional since 2020 but recommended for international applicants), 2 letters of recommendation (one from a math/science teacher and one from a humanities teacher), MIT-specific essays, and an optional portfolio (Maker Portfolio).

Key dates: Early Action: November 1 (decisions in mid-December). Regular Decision: January 1 (decisions in late March).

Student life

MIT offers a one-of-a-kind student experience: an intensely collaborative culture (students don’t compete against each other), quirky traditions (“hacks”, elaborate engineering pranks), and access to the Boston/Cambridge startup ecosystem. The campus runs along the Charles River, a few minutes from Harvard, with direct access to Boston’s public transit network.

What English test score do you need for MIT?

If you have been using English for less than 5 years (or don’t speak it at home or at school), MIT strongly recommends taking an English test in addition to the SAT/ACT. Official required scores:

Test Minimum Recommended
TOEFL iBT 90 100
IELTS 7,0 7,5
Duolingo English Test 120 125
Pearson PTE Academic 65 70
Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 185 190

In practice, admitted international students score well above the minimums: see the breakdown by university in our comparison What IELTS score do you need for Oxford, MIT or the LSE?. MIT admissions 2026: the “maker mindset” they look for

MIT has an admission rate of 4.6% (Class of 2029: 29,281 applications, 1,334 admitted, including 136 international students out of 6,926 applicants, or about 2%). Official ranges for admitted students (middle 50%): SAT Math 780-800, Evidence-Based Reading & Writing 740-780, ACT 34-36. If you are taking the French baccalaureate, aim for a mention Très Bien with an average of 18+ and the Maths + Physique-Chimie or Maths + NSI specialties.

Beyond grades, MIT looks for applicants who build, experiment and invent: robotics (FIRST Robotics, VEX), open-source code, published research, international olympiads (IMO, IPhO). The Maker Portfolio is designed precisely to show what you have built with your own hands.

MIT costs 2026-2027: total cost of attendance and financial aid

Item (2026-27) Amount
Tuition 66 720 $
Student life fee 420 $
Housing 14 090 $
Meals 8 104 $
Books and supplies 930 $
Personal expenses 2 496 $
Total $92,760/year (≈ €85,600)

The sticker price doesn’t tell you what you’ll actually pay. MIT’s aid scale (in effect since 2025-26): family income under $200,000 = free tuition; under $100,000 = parents pay nothing at all. The median price actually paid by students receiving aid was $10,268 in 2024-25, and 88% of students graduate debt-free. These rules apply to international students as well as Americans: international families submit a CSS Profile (MIT code: 3514) along with translated proof of income.

Applying to MIT: its own portal and 5 short essays

MIT does not accept the Common App: you apply through its own portal, apply.mitadmissions.org. There are two rounds: Early Action (non-restrictive, November 1) or Regular Action (January 5). The SAT or ACT is required. Two letters of recommendation are required: one from a math or science teacher, and one from a teacher of English, humanities or languages.

The 5 short essays (200-250 words each): what you do for fun, the world you come from, the subject you’re passionate about, a challenge you’ve overcome, and how you collaborate with others. MIT is organized into 5 schools: Engineering accounts for 46% of majors, and Computer Science (“Course 6”) remains the most popular department. Student-to-faculty ratio: 3:1.
