Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Oxford admissions

What are the realistic chances of getting into Oxford?
With an overall acceptance rate of approximately 17%, getting into Oxford is highly competitive. However, acceptance rates vary significantly by programme (Medicine is around 7%, while some humanities programmes are higher). Your chances depend on your academic profile, test scores, personal statement, and interview performance. Most successful applicants have stellar academics (A*AA or above), excellent test scores, and can articulate a genuine passion for their chosen subject.
Do I need to take TSA or MAT for my programme?
It depends on your programme. TSA is required for Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE), Social Sciences, and some related courses. MAT is required for Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Medicine requires UCAT or BMAT. Law requires LNAT. Check Oxford’s website for your specific programme requirements and register early.
Can international students from the US apply to Oxford?
Absolutely. US citizens and residents can apply to Oxford and Cambridge. However, note that A-Levels or IB are typically preferred over US high school diplomas. If you have an IB, AP scores, or are taking A-Levels, you can apply directly. US applicants with SATs/ACTs should also have strong AP scores. You’ll apply directly through Oxford’s application portal rather than UCAS.
How important is the Oxford interview?
The interview is extremely important and is a critical differentiator for Oxford admissions. It typically accounts for a significant portion of the admissions decision. Interviews are designed to assess your depth of thinking, subject knowledge, and ability to engage with challenging ideas. Strong academics get you through the door, but the interview often determines whether you receive an offer.
What should my personal statement focus on?
Your personal statement should demonstrate genuine intellectual curiosity in your subject, show evidence of independent thinking, and explain what specifically attracts you to Oxford. Avoid generic statements and instead provide concrete examples of how you’ve engaged deeply with your subject. Admissions tutors want to see that you’ve thought seriously about your academic interests and can articulate why Oxford is the right place for you.
