Germany is Europe’s best-kept secret for international students: world-class education, near-zero tuition fees, and a booming economy offering excellent career prospects. Yet it remains massively underrated among francophone students. Here’s everything you need to know to study in Germany in 2026.

Why Germany?

German public universities charge a Semesterbeitrag (semester contribution) of €150–350 — not tuition fees. This makes Germany one of the most affordable destinations for a high-quality degree. Add to that a thriving tech and engineering sector, and you understand why Germany attracts over 400,000 international students annually.

Top Universities in Germany

  • TU Munich (TUM) — #1 in Germany, top 50 globally, exceptional engineering and management
  • LMU Munich — Research excellence, strong humanities and social sciences
  • Heidelberg University — Germany’s oldest university, life sciences and medicine
  • HU Berlin / FU Berlin / TU Berlin — The Berlin trio covering all major disciplines
  • WHU – Otto Beisheim School — Private business school, Germany’s equivalent of HEC
  • Mannheim University — #1 for economics and business in Germany

English-Language Programmes

Over 1,500 Master’s and 100+ Bachelor’s programmes are taught entirely in English in Germany. Key areas: engineering, computer science, business, economics, and data science. Language of instruction should NOT be a barrier to choosing Germany.

Admission Requirements

For most Bachelor’s programmes: Abitur equivalent (French Baccalauréat is generally accepted), minimum grade requirements vary by programme, and for English programmes: IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 90+. For Master’s: Bachelor’s degree, often GPA requirements, sometimes GMAT/GRE.

Cost of Living

Budget €800–1,100/month for accommodation, food, transport and personal expenses. Berlin is relatively affordable; Munich is the most expensive. Student jobs (Werkstudent) are common and help cover costs.

Student Visa for Germany

EU/EEA citizens: no visa needed. Non-EU: apply for a Student Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken) at the German embassy. Requirements include university admission confirmation, proof of financial resources (€11,208/year blocked account), health insurance, and valid passport.

Post-Study Options

Germany offers an 18-month job-seeker visa after graduation. With a German degree and German language skills, finding employment is highly feasible — Germany has a well-documented shortage of skilled workers.
