The logical reasoning section of the Bocconi Online Bocconi Test is where many candidates lose points unnecessarily — not because they lack intelligence, but because they haven’t learned to approach logic questions strategically. This guide breaks down every question type with proven methods.

Section Overview

The logic section of the Online Bocconi Test consists of 10 questions in 20 minutes. Scoring: +1 correct, −0.25 incorrect, 0 unanswered. Question types include verbal reasoning, numerical sequences, logical deductions, and syllogisms.

Type 1: Numerical Sequences

A series of numbers follows a pattern — find the next number. Common patterns: arithmetic (+n each step), geometric (×n each step), alternating (+a, −b, +a, −b), Fibonacci-style (each term = sum of two previous), and squared/cubed sequences.

Strategy: Calculate the difference between consecutive terms first. If differences are constant → arithmetic. If differences grow proportionally → geometric. If differences follow their own pattern → second-order sequence. Solve in under 45 seconds.

Type 2: Logical Deductions (Syllogisms)

Given premises, identify which conclusion(s) logically follow. Example: « All economists are analysts. Some analysts are consultants. Therefore: (A) All economists are consultants (B) Some economists may be consultants (C) No economist is a consultant. »

Strategy: Draw Venn diagrams mentally. Never assume what isn’t stated. The correct answer follows NECESSARILY from the premises — « may be » is usually safe, « all » is usually a trap.

Type 3: Verbal Reasoning

A short text followed by statements — identify which is true, false, or cannot be determined based on the text alone. Key rule: base ONLY on what the text says, not your external knowledge.

Strategy: Underline key claims in the text. For each statement, ask: « Is this explicitly stated? Is this the logical opposite of what’s stated? Is there insufficient information? » « Cannot be determined » is correct more often than students expect.

Type 4: Spatial and Pattern Reasoning

Visual patterns — matrices, figure sequences, missing pieces. Strategy: identify what changes (rotation, reflection, colour, number of elements) and predict the next step.

The 2-Pass Method

Pass 1: Answer every question you can solve in under 60 seconds. Mark skipped ones. Pass 2: Return to skipped questions with remaining time. Never spend more than 2 minutes on any single question — with the −0.25 penalty, a guess on a 3-option elimination is still better than leaving it.

Practice Resources

CISIA (cisiaonline.it) offers official free practice tests. Aim to complete 5 full timed logic sections before your test date, always analysing your errors afterward.
