Update, 2 October 2026: HEC closes its round 1 at noon on 7 October, and Bocconi has opened its MSc application window. Read our guide to the October window for 2027 master’s programmes.

On 16 September 2026, QS published the 2027 edition of its Business Master’s Rankings, the global ranking of specialized master’s programmes in management, finance, marketing, business analytics and supply chain. The verdict is striking for France: HEC Paris ranks first in the world in three disciplines at once, with its Master in Management, Master in Finance and Master in Marketing. Beyond the headline, the ranking confirms something we see every year with our students: the master’s programmes of France’s grandes écoles remain the global benchmark, and competition for places has never been fiercer. Here is what the ranking really says and, more importantly, what it means for your 2027 application.

HEC Paris wins a global triple crown

In the 2027 edition, HEC Paris ranks first in the world in the Master in Management ranking (with its MSc Strategic Management), the Masters in Finance ranking (with its Master in International Finance) and the Masters in Marketing ranking. The school also ranks second worldwide in Business Analytics with the MSc Data Science & AI for Business, run jointly with Polytechnique (X-HEC), behind MIT Sloan, which leads this discipline.

In management, London Business School holds on to second place worldwide and Imperial Business School ranks 9th. QS notes remarkable stability at the top compared with the 2026 edition, in which ESSEC (3rd) and CEMS (4th) rounded out the top 5: the world’s top three in management remain dominated by European programmes.

In finance, behind HEC, the podium and the top 10 remain British and American: Oxford Saïd is 2nd, Cambridge Judge 4th, London Business School 5th and the LSE 8th. The UK and the US each place six schools in the top 20 of this discipline, the largest in the ranking, with 286 programmes assessed worldwide.

Finally, in marketing, the podium is entirely French: HEC finishes ahead of ESSEC and ESCP, and European schools take eight of the top ten places, with Warwick the highest-ranked UK school in 6th. QS also points out that Europe accounts for 154 of the 256 programmes ranked in management, a sign of how deep the European offering is compared with the US, which, by contrast, dominates Business Analytics.

What this ranking confirms for applicants

First takeaway: for a master’s in management or finance, Europe, and France in particular, still offers the best combination of selectivity, network and career prospects in the world. This is nothing new, as HEC already led several disciplines last year, but the consistency of these positions, confirmed once again this year, carries real weight with international recruiters. We made the same point when analyzing the FT Masters in Management 2026 ranking: French schools are firmly established at the top, whichever ranking you look at.

Second takeaway: QS rankings should be read programme by programme, not school by school. The same institution can rank first in one discipline and miss the top 10 in another. Before you build your list, always check where the specific programme you are targeting stands in the discipline that matches your career goals. This is especially true in finance, where the gap in placement between a general master’s and a specialized Master in Finance can be considerable.

Third takeaway: a ranking tells you nothing about your chances of admission. The programmes at the top of these tables receive thousands of applications for a few hundred places, and they select on academic record, test scores, essays and interviews. A ranking helps you prioritize your targets, not get into them. To learn how to use rankings wisely in your strategy, our guide to global university rankings explains what each ranking actually measures.

The 2027 admissions calendar is already under way: key dates

This ranking comes out at a pivotal moment: admissions for the 2027 intake have just opened, and the first major deadline is less than three weeks away. At HEC, round 1 for master’s applications closes at noon (Paris time) on October 7, 2026, with shortlisting results on October 26 and admission decisions on November 19 at 6 pm. The following rounds close on November 26, 2026, February 17, 2027 and April 28, 2027.

Applying in round 1 is not mandatory, but it is often the smart move for applicants with an already strong profile: every place is still available, your motivation is easier to demonstrate, and an offer before Christmas changes the rest of your year. Conversely, if your GMAT or GRE score is not there yet, you are better off aiming for round 2 with a complete application than rushing a round 1 application. This kind of trade-off, round by round and school by school, is exactly what we work out with our students. How to turn this ranking into a strategy

A global top 10 is not an application list. A good list combines ambitious programs, realistic targets and safe choices, aligned with your goals, your academic profile and your constraints. It takes into account each program’s prerequisites, the tests required, the dates of each round and how the whole list fits together: a candidate applying to HEC, LBS and Oxford Saïd at the same time has to juggle three timelines, three essay formats and sometimes three different tests. Our Master in Management admissions coaching page sets out, round by round, what each school expects.

This is the work our coaches do. They are alumni of the schools you are targeting, backed by more than 160 Google reviews. If you are preparing a master’s application for fall 2027 entry, the time to structure your strategy is now, not in December. Book your strategy call: we will review your profile, your target schools and your timeline, round by round.
