Understanding the major university rankings
When choosing a university abroad, international rankings are a valuable benchmark. But they don’t all measure the same thing: some emphasize reputation, others research or employability. This guide brings together the four leading rankings (QS, THE, Shanghai and Financial Times), each with a detailed page and its up-to-date top 10.

The three major global rankings
The QS ranking (2027 edition, published June 18, 2026) puts MIT at the top, with Imperial College London and Stanford tied for 2nd; it gives significant weight to academic reputation and employability. The THE ranking (2026) crowns Oxford for the tenth year running and focuses on research and teaching. The Shanghai Ranking (ARWU 2026), the oldest of the three, measures top-level research and once again ranks Harvard No. 1, ahead of Stanford and MIT; Paris-Saclay is 13th (source: shanghairanking.com, ARWU 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). For an overview, see also our top 10 universities in the world.
For business schools: the Financial Times
For business schools, the European benchmark is the FT European Business Schools ranking (2025), led by INSEAD and HEC Paris, with six French schools in the top 10. It combines a school’s performance across its MBA, Master in Management and Executive Education programs.
World university rankings 2026-2027: the top 10 in each of the three rankings
The table below compares the top ten universities in the three global rankings current for the 2026 academic year. Six institutions appear in all three top 10s: MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford and Caltech. This stable core is where the rankings agree. The differences reflect their methodologies: Imperial College London and UCL rank higher in QS thanks to employer reputation and internationalization; Berkeley, Chicago and Columbia do better in Shanghai, which counts only research; Princeton and Yale benefit in THE from the intensity of their teaching.

Shanghai Ranking 2026: key takeaways
The Academic Ranking of World Universities 2026 confirms US dominance: Harvard remains No. 1, followed by Stanford and MIT; Cambridge (4th) and Oxford (7th) are the only non-US universities in the top 10 (source: shanghairanking.com, ARWU 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). The Shanghai Ranking measures research alone: Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals won by alumni and faculty, highly cited researchers, papers in Nature and Science, and research output relative to size. It ignores teaching, graduate employability and internationalization. For a high school student choosing a bachelor’s degree, it therefore shows how strong an institution is in research, not the quality of undergraduate teaching and support. Our Shanghai Ranking page explains the methodology and history in detail.
QS Rankings 2027: what’s new
Published on June 18, 2026, the QS World University Rankings 2027 ranks 1,504 universities, including 98 new entries. MIT takes first place, Imperial College London and Stanford share second, Oxford is 4th, Harvard 5th and Cambridge 6th; ETH Zurich and UCL are tied 8th, and the National University of Singapore completes the top 10 (source: topuniversities.com and qs.com, QS World University Rankings 2027 published June 18, 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). QS gives heavy weight to academic reputation and employer reputation, as well as to the proportion of international students, which favors UK universities, with their strong international outlook. It is the most useful ranking for comparing English-speaking universities on how much employers value their degrees. See the full top 10 on our QS World University Rankings page.
Where do French universities stand in the global rankings?
France is moving up the rankings thanks to mergers between institutions. In the Shanghai Ranking 2026, Université Paris-Saclay is 13th in the world and the top French university (source: shanghairanking.com, ARWU 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). In the QS 2027 ranking, Université PSL (Paris Sciences et Lettres) is 34th, the highest rank in the European Union (source: topuniversities.com and qs.com, QS World University Rankings 2027 published June 18, 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). These results are driven by research: when it comes to undergraduate teaching, the French grandes écoles (HEC, ESSEC, ESCP, Polytechnique, Sciences Po) are either absent from or rank poorly in the overall rankings because they lack comparable research output, even though they dominate the Financial Times specialist rankings. That is why it pays to cross-check the overall ranking with subject rankings before comparing a French bachelor’s degree with one abroad, as we do on our bachelor’s admissions page.
How to read a ranking properly
No ranking should be read on its own. Three habits to adopt: cross-check several rankings (a strong university shows up in all three); focus on subject rankings, which are often more telling than the overall ranking; and put the rank in the context of your plans: program, country, cost, student life and career prospects matter as much as position.

Frequently asked questions
Which ranking is the most reliable?
None of them is “the” best. Shanghai is the most objective on research, while QS and THE also factor in reputation and teaching. Ideally, cross-reference them.
Which French university ranks highest?
Depending on the ranking, Université Paris-Saclay (13th in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking), Université PSL (34th in QS 2027) and Institut Polytechnique de Paris are consistently the highest placed (source: shanghairanking.com, ARWU 2026, accessed September 6, 2026).
Do the rankings change every year?
Yes, but the top changes very little. We update these pages with each new edition (QS in June, Shanghai in August, THE in October, FT in December).
What is the best university in the world in 2026?
It depends on the ranking: MIT is No. 1 in QS 2027 (published June 18, 2026), Oxford is No. 1 in THE 2026 for the tenth year running, and Harvard is No. 1 in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking (source: shanghairanking.com, ARWU 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). All three universities appear in the top 10 of all three rankings.
When is the next Shanghai Ranking released?
The Shanghai Ranking is published every year in August; the 2026 edition is out, with Harvard at No. 1 and Paris-Saclay 13th (source: shanghairanking.com, ARWU 2026, accessed September 6, 2026). The next major release is THE 2027, expected in October 2026, followed by the FT European Business Schools ranking in December 2026.
Which French business schools lead the rankings?
France is the best-represented country in business school rankings. In the FT European Business Schools 2025 ranking, six French schools are in the top 10: INSEAD (1st), HEC Paris (2nd), ESCP (4th), ESSEC (7th), EDHEC (9th) and emlyon (10th). Source: ft.com, accessed September 6, 2026.
