Everyone is watching 15 October, the UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine and dentistry. But for thousands of applicants, the real cutoff comes sooner: at 6pm UK time on Monday 28 September 2026, bookings close for the three UAT-UK admissions tests, the ESAT, the TMUA and the TARA. No confirmed booking by that hour means no October test. And without an October test, an Oxford application is not viable for the courses concerned, along with a large share of Cambridge applications. Here is who is affected, what happens if you miss the window, and how to use the three weeks between booking and test day.
The three UAT-UK tests at a glance
Since 2026, Oxford has retired its old in-house tests (MAT, PAT, TSA) in favour of the UAT-UK tests already used by Cambridge. There are three, all computer-based, all sat at an authorised Pearson VUE test centre, and none allows a calculator.
The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) covers science courses. It is built from 40-minute modules of 27 questions each: Mathematics 1 is compulsory for everyone, then each course either imposes or lets you choose two further modules from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, for 120 minutes in total.
The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) assesses mathematical reasoning over 2 hours 30 minutes: two 75-minute papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each.
The TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions), the newest of the three, requires no subject knowledge: three 40-minute modules, two sets of 22 multiple-choice questions on critical thinking and problem solving, then one essay of up to 750 words chosen from three prompts.
Who needs to book before 28 September
At Oxford, almost everyone. The ESAT is required for Biomedical Sciences, Engineering Science, Physics, and Physics and Philosophy. The TMUA covers Computer Science, Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics, and their joint degrees with Philosophy or Computer Science. The TARA applies to seven heavily subscribed courses: PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics), Economics and Management, History and Economics, History and Politics, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology, and Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics. The notable exceptions are Medicine (UCAT) and Law (LNAT), which run on their own calendars.
At Cambridge, the ESAT is required for Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine. One detail matters: Engineering applicants must take Mathematics 1, Physics and Mathematics 2, while the other three courses allow a choice of the two additional modules. The TMUA is required for Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics.
Beyond Oxbridge, the TMUA is used by five other universities, including LSE, Imperial, UCL, Warwick and Durham, on a compulsory or optional basis depending on the course. The ESAT also serves Imperial and UCL for certain engineering and science degrees, and the TARA is used by UCL. What happens if you miss the window
This is where the rules are unforgiving. For Oxford and Cambridge, the October sitting (12 to 16 October 2026) is the only one that counts: applicants working to the 15 October UCAS deadline must sit their test in that window. A January sitting exists (4 to 8 January 2027, booking closes 21 December), but it is reserved for narrow cases such as mature applicants to certain Cambridge colleges or Oxford’s Foundation Year. For a standard 2027 entry applicant, January is not a safety net: missing 28 September effectively means giving up Oxford, or the relevant Cambridge course, for this cycle.
For TMUA courses outside Oxbridge, whether the test is compulsory or optional, January remains a realistic fallback: results land on 8 February 2027, before most decisions. October is still preferable, since results released on 16 November 2026 can inform your final choices.
The practical details people get wrong
Registration runs through the official UAT-UK website (esat-tmua.ac.uk): create an account, then book a slot at a Pearson VUE centre. The fee is 78 pounds in the UK and Republic of Ireland, and 133 pounds everywhere else. Do not leave it to the final evening: slots at popular centres go quickly, and a booking started at 5.55pm on 28 September can fail at 6.01pm. Candidates testing in China, Hong Kong or Macau have fixed dates within the 12 to 16 October window.
Note also that results come out on 16 November 2026, after the UCAS deadline: you apply without knowing your score. Three weeks to prepare: the right countdown
Between 28 September and mid-October you have roughly three weeks. That is short, but enough for an academically solid candidate who works in the right order. Week one: sit a full mock under real conditions (timed, no calculator) using the free official practice papers on the UAT-UK site, and identify your two or three recurring weaknesses. Week two: target those weaknesses specifically rather than revising everything. Week three: chain timed mocks to automate pacing, the real differentiator on 40-minute modules. For the TARA, which has no past papers of its own yet, old TSA papers remain the best training material for the first two modules.

What this deadline says about strategy
The UAT-UK calendar illustrates something our students learn early: elite UK applications are won in September, not October. An applicant who discovers on 10 October that a test had to be booked three weeks earlier did not fail on merit, they failed on logistics.
