If you were waiting for test booking to open today, 26 October, you can stand down for 48 hours. UAT-UK, the consortium that runs the ESAT and the TMUA, has pushed back the opening of booking for the January 2027 sitting: a maintenance banner on esat-tmua.ac.uk now says booking is expected to open at 3pm GMT on Wednesday 28 October 2026. For everyone who missed the October window, or who deliberately kept January in reserve, this is the starting gun for the second and final test window of the 2027 admissions cycle.
Here is what the official calendar says as of today, what the January sitting can and cannot do for your application, and how to plan the next nine weeks around it.
The January 2027 dates, straight from the official calendar
The key dates published on esat-tmua.ac.uk for the second sitting are the following:
- Test booking opens: Wednesday 28 October 2026 at 3pm GMT (delayed from the originally expected date because of system maintenance).
- Deadline to request access arrangements: 7 December 2026, 6pm GMT. Requests take up to 10 working days to process, and candidates who apply by the deadline can still book once approved.
- Deadline to request a bursary: 14 December 2026, 6pm GMT.
- Test booking closes: 21 December 2026, 6pm GMT.
- Test window: 4 to 8 January 2027. Candidates sitting in China, Hong Kong or Macau have fixed days: ESAT on 6 January, TARA on 7 January, TMUA on 8 January.
- Results: 8 February 2027, via your UAT-UK account.
The fee is unchanged: £78 for candidates in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, £133 elsewhere. One rule matters more than any other: you can only sit once per admissions cycle. If you took the ESAT or the TMUA in October, January is not a retake opportunity. UAT-UK also states there is no advantage to either sitting: an October score and a January score carry the same weight.
Who the January sitting is really for
The single most misread line on the official site is this one: the January sitting is not applicable for Oxford or Cambridge applicants, with two narrow exceptions, mature applicants to a Cambridge mature college with a January admissions deadline, and applicants to the Astrophoria Foundation Year at Oxford. If you applied to Oxford or Cambridge through the standard 15 October UCAS route and did not test in October, the January window will not repair that file.
For everyone else, January is a full-value option. The ESAT is used by Imperial College London, Cambridge, Oxford and UCL for science and engineering courses, so a January ESAT mainly serves Imperial and UCL candidates. The TMUA is used by seven universities for selected courses in mathematics, economics and computer science, among them LSE, Warwick, Durham, UCL and Imperial: for those courses, a January TMUA sits comfortably inside the normal UCAS timeline. Our TMUA preparation hub covers the format and the 2027 dates in detail, and our TMUA past papers page is where serious preparation starts.
The calendar nuance that changes your strategy
Put the two official calendars side by side and a detail jumps out. The UCAS equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry is 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027, for all undergraduate courses except those with a 15 October deadline. The January test window runs from 4 to 8 January, and results come out on 8 February 2027.
In other words: you will submit your UCAS application before you know your score, and in most cases you will sit the test days before the UCAS deadline itself. Universities that use the ESAT or the TMUA know this and wait for the February results before completing their decisions. What this means in practice is that the test and the application are two separate workstreams through December: one does not wait for the other. Treat the 21 December booking deadline as earlier than it looks, because the testing slots at Pearson centres are finite and the best time slots go first, as candidates discovered during the September booking rush for the October sitting.
How to use the next nine weeks
A realistic plan for a January candidate looks like this. Book in the first days after 28 October rather than in December, and choose your centre carefully. Build a preparation block of six to eight weeks through November and December: past papers under timed conditions, error logs, and a full dress rehearsal in the last week of December, the same method we described in our guide to the final week before the October tests. In parallel, finish your UCAS file so it is ready well before 13 January: course choices, reference and personal statement do not improve under deadline pressure, and this is exactly what our UCAS admissions counseling is built for.
Students aiming at the most selective combinations, a TMUA score for LSE economics, an ESAT for Imperial engineering, usually benefit from structured coaching rather than preparation alone. That is the logic of our Oxbridge admissions pack, which pairs test preparation with application strategy. The results are measurable: our students have received 650+ offers from UK universities, out of 1,000+ students accompanied since 2018. Figures taken from our admissions database, 2019 to 2025 intakes. They are minimums: the 2017-2018 and 2025-2026 intakes are not yet consolidated. Families rate the experience 5/5 on Google across 160+ Google reviews.
If you are weighing a January sitting, or wondering whether your target courses even need the test, the fastest way to find out is a conversation. Book a strategy call with our team and we will map your test calendar against your UCAS choices before booking opens on Wednesday.
