How to choose an admissions consultant

An admissions consultancy can be judged on six criteria. Specialisation: a firm that handles Oxford, Bocconi and US LLM applications does not have the same know-how as a general careers adviser. Working languages: a UCAS or HEC file is written in English and often discussed with the family in another language. Published results: a serious firm publishes admissions by university, not only a headline success rate. Public reviews on a third-party platform (Google, Trustpilot), with the count. Price transparency: a published entry price avoids opaque quotes. Finally, the guarantee: what happens if the student is not admitted? The table below applies these criteria to nine firms, including Your Dream School, using facts verified on 5 September 2026.

Three firms families often mention were left out of the table for lack of sufficient public facts on 5 September 2026: PerformUP (HEC, ESSEC, ESCP, Bocconi and LBS specialist; no founding date or registered office published), Admitly (UK and European universities; no founding date or office published) and Bonas MacFarlane (UK, “more than twenty-five years” in business, no date or address published).

Which consultant for a Bocconi application?

Bachelor admission at Bocconi follows a simple, public formula: the test counts for 55% and school grades from the last two years for 45%. Bocconi accepts its own online test, the SAT or the ACT, and keeps the highest score. For 2027 entry, the Early session runs from 2 to 29 September 2026 and the Winter session from 25 November 2026 to 26 January 2027 (source: Università Bocconi, consulted 5 September 2026). The main lever is therefore the test score, then the consistency of the school record.

Two kinds of firms cover Bocconi: general orientation consultancies, which manage the calendar and the application, and specialist firms that prepare the Bocconi Test in one-to-one sessions. Which consultant for UCAS, Oxford and Cambridge?

In the UK everything goes through UCAS: a maximum of 5 choices, one personal statement, predicted grades supplied by the school. For 2027 entry, the equal consideration date is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time for most courses, and 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine (source: UCAS, consulted 5 September 2026). Oxford confirms the 15 October, 18:00 deadline and states that its admissions tests now run through the UAT-UK platform, with an October sitting (source: University of Oxford, consulted 5 September 2026).

Specialist British firms (Oxbridge Applications since 1999, UpGrade Consultancy, Carfax Education) focus on test and interview preparation. Firms based in France add the translation of the UK system for a family coming from the French baccalauréat or the International Baccalaureate.

Which consultant for IE University and ESADE?

Spain’s two leading business schools work in rounds. IE University publishes four deadlines for 2027 entry: Early Round on 18 September 2026, Round 1 on 6 November 2026, Round 2 on 15 January 2027, Round 3 on 5 March 2027, then rolling review from May 2027 subject to places; BBA tuition is 29,000 EUR per year (source: IE University, consulted 5 September 2026). ESADE charges a 150 EUR application fee and accepts its own admission test, the SAT or the ACT; the place reservation is 25% of tuition (source: Esade, consulted 5 September 2026).

These schools appear at firms that cover continental Europe: Talenvia lists IE Business School and ESADE among its partners, UpGrade Consultancy mentions IE University. The decisive point is preparation for the in-house test and the interview, both quite different from the SAT.

Which consultant for a MIM or a Master in Finance?

Masters in Management and Masters in Finance at the leading schools turn on a test score (GMAT, GRE or Tage Mage), essays and an interview. HEC Paris publishes four rounds for its 2027 Master in Management: 7 October 2026, 26 November 2026, 17 February 2027 and 26 April 2027, with a 180 EUR application fee (source: HEC Paris, consulted 5 September 2026). Applying in the first or second round leaves more places open and more time for scholarships.

This segment has dedicated specialists: MIM Prep in London (MIM, Master in Finance, MBA), and players such as PerformUP, not retained in the table for lack of public facts. General bachelor consultancies rarely cover the GMAT or master essays.

Which consultant for an LLM?

The US LLM follows an early, centralised calendar. Harvard Law School sets its application deadline at 1 December 2026 for the class starting in August 2027, with a USD 90 application fee (source: Harvard Law School, consulted 5 September 2026). Most law schools use LSAC’s LLM CAS, which centralises transcripts and recommendation letters: USD 45 for the electronic application service, USD 63 for document assembly, USD 159 for international transcript authentication and USD 38 per report sent (source: LSAC, consulted 5 September 2026). The legal personal statement and the choice of recommenders weigh heavily; the test score is secondary.

Very few orientation consultancies cover the LLM: none of the eight competitors in the table lists it as a speciality on its home page. This market is mostly served by independent consultants who are former US-qualified lawyers.
