International students in a university lecture hall, the audience of Your Dream School's college counselling

Updated 6 September 2026

College counselling is the North American term for university admissions consulting: a professional who helps a student choose universities, plan tests, write applications and prepare interviews. Your Dream School has provided this service since 2018 to more than 1,000 students in French and English, with 160+ five-star Google reviews. Below: what a counsellor does month by month, how the application systems differ, and what to expect from us.

Key facts and figures

  • Common App lets a student apply to more than 1,000 member schools through one platform (source: Common App, consulted 5 September 2026).
  • UCAS 2027 entry: 5 choices per application; Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses close 15 October 2026, other courses 13 January 2027, both at 18:00 UK time (source: UCAS, consulted 5 September 2026).
  • Studielink (Netherlands): 15 January for numerus fixus programmes, 1 May for other programmes (source: Study in NL, consulted 5 September 2026).
  • Oxford and Cambridge admissions tests: UAT-UK tests (ESAT, TMUA, TARA) sat 12 to 16 October 2026, results 16 November 2026; Cambridge decisions 27 January 2027 (sources: University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, consulted 5 September 2026).

I came to Your Dream School because my daughter wanted to apply in post-bac for a Bachelor’s in Mathematics at the big Anglo-Saxon universities. I was very satisfied with the care delivered by this organization, just as much with the mentoring plan as with the plan for administrative procedures, particularly with drafting the personal statement.

What a college counsellor does, month by month

Grade 10 / Year 11: foundations

September to June. The counsellor checks grades and subject choices against the entry requirements of the target countries, plans any English test (IELTS or TOEFL), and starts a record of activities.

Grade 11 / Year 12: strategy and tests

September to December. Long assessment; provisional list of 10 universities across 2 or 3 countries; SAT or ACT decision.

January to June. Test sittings, campus research, first draft of the Common App essay or UCAS personal statement over the summer. Oxbridge candidates prepare for their October admissions test; for the October 2026 sitting, UAT-UK booking ran from 20 July to 28 September 2026 (source: University of Oxford, consulted 5 September 2026).

Grade 12 / Year 13: applications

September. IE Early Round (18 September 2026) and Bocconi Early session (29 September 2026). October. UCAS Oxbridge and medicine deadline (15 October 2026); Cambridge My Cambridge Application by 22 October 2026. November to January. US early and regular rounds, UCAS main deadline (13 January 2027), Studielink numerus fixus (15 January). December to March. Interviews, then offers. April to June. Decisions, deposits, housing, visa.

Common App, UCAS, Studielink or direct application?

  • Common App (USA, some Canadian and European schools): one main essay, activities list, school report and teacher recommendations; each college adds its own supplements and deadlines. More than 1,000 member schools.
  • UCAS (United Kingdom): 5 course choices, one personal statement, one reference with predicted grades. Offers are usually conditional on final exam results.
  • Studielink (Netherlands): national registration portal; selective (numerus fixus) programmes close 15 January and often add a written assignment or online test.
  • Direct applications (Bocconi, IE, ESADE, Canadian universities): each school runs its own portal, test and rounds. Bocconi weighs its test at 55% and school grades at 45%; ESADE combines its own test or SAT (average 1350, minimum 1200) with the school record and an interview (sources: Bocconi, Esade, consulted 5 September 2026).

Most families combine two or three systems; the counsellor keeps one master calendar. See our bachelor admissions hub for the country pages.

Test strategy, essays and interviews

Tests. SAT or ACT for the US and as a substitute for the Bocconi, IE or ESADE tests; IELTS or TOEFL for English (ESADE waives its English test at IELTS 7 or TOEFL iBT 100, source: Esade, consulted 5 September 2026); UAT-UK tests, UCAT or LNAT for Oxford and Cambridge. Preparation is one-to-one, in 10, 20 or 30-hour packs.

Essays. A US essay and a UCAS personal statement answer different questions. The first shows character through a story; the second argues academic fit for one subject. We work through successive drafts with the student, never for the student, and brief the teachers who write recommendations.

Interviews. Oxford and Cambridge interviews are academic conversations held in December; IE and ESADE interviews test motivation. We run mock interviews, recorded and debriefed. See our Oxbridge admissions pack.

Why Your Dream School for college counselling

A college counsellor is only useful if one person holds the whole calendar: Common App, UCAS, Studielink and the direct portals, plus the tests that feed them. That is how Your Dream School has worked since 2018, online, in English and French, with more than 1,000 students from families on every continent. Our results are published by university and our 160+ five-star Google reviews are public. If none of the 3 first-choice universities set at the start admits the student, we accompany the re-application. Email contact@yourdreamschool.com or use our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

When should international students start college counselling?

Two years before university entry is the comfortable start: Grade 10 or Year 11 for foundations, Grade 11 or Year 12 for strategy and tests. For 2027 entry, Oxbridge and medicine files close on 15 October 2026 and the UCAS main deadline is 13 January 2027 (source: UCAS, consulted 5 September 2026), so Year 13 is already application year.

How many universities should a student apply to?

UCAS allows 5 choices per application and Bocconi up to 4 programme preferences (sources: UCAS, Bocconi, consulted 5 September 2026); Common App colleges each set their own supplements, so every extra US college costs writing time. Our Essential formula shortlists 5 universities and our Premium formula 10, typically across 2 or 3 countries with a mix of reach, target and safer options.

Do international students need the SAT or ACT?

Not everywhere. UK universities do not use them. In the US many colleges are test-optional but strong scores still help. Bocconi, IE University and ESADE accept SAT or ACT instead of their own tests; ESADE reports an average SAT of 1350 (minimum 1200) and an average ACT of 30 (minimum 24) (source: Esade, consulted 5 September 2026).

What is the difference between a Common App essay and a UCAS personal statement?

The Common App essay is a personal story that shows character and is shared by every college on the list. The UCAS personal statement is an academic argument for one subject, read by up to 5 universities. Both go through several drafts with the counsellor; we question and edit, the student writes.

Which English tests do universities accept?

IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT are accepted almost everywhere. ESADE waives its English test from IELTS 7 (minimum 6 per component) or TOEFL iBT 100 (source: Esade, consulted 5 September 2026); Columbia Law School asks LL.M. applicants for IELTS 8 overall (source: Columbia Law School, consulted 5 September 2026). We prepare both tests in 10 to 30-hour packs.

How much does college counselling cost at Your Dream School?

Counselling starts at 3,000 EUR; the unlimited formula, which manages every application of the season, is quoted on request. The Essential formula (5 universities, personal statement review) and the Premium formula (10 universities, essay writing, interview preparation, unlimited follow-up) are quoted after a free 30-minute assessment, according to the countries and tests involved.
