TMUA Preparation: Test of Mathematics for University Admission Guide
The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is used by participating universities for selected mathematics-related courses, including some economics and computer science programmes. Check the admissions page for your exact course and entry year to confirm whether it is required.
The TMUA is part of a wider admissions assessment. A score alone does not guarantee an interview, an offer or reduced offer conditions.
Test structure
The TMUA consists of two 75-minute papers, sat in a single session.
Paper 1, Applications of Mathematical Knowledge, tests how you use mathematics in new situations. It contains 20 multiple-choice questions.
Paper 2, Mathematical Reasoning, focuses on reasoning and elementary logic. It also contains 20 multiple-choice questions.
Calculators and dictionaries are not permitted. You receive one overall TMUA score on a 1–9 scale, rather than a separate score for each paper. There is no universal pass mark.
When to register and sit
For 2027 entry, the general test windows are 12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027. Most Oxford and Cambridge applicants must sit in October. The official UAT-UK calendar lists booking deadlines, fees, regional dates and exceptions. Book through the official UAT-UK process.
Who should prepare carefully
Use practice sessions to identify the topics and question types that need work. Avoid treating an unofficial practice score as an admissions prediction.
If you study mathematics in French, allow time to become familiar with the English terminology. Compare your school syllabus with the current TMUA specification rather than assuming a direct equivalence.
How to prepare
Combine topic review with timed practice and careful correction. Each paper gives 75 minutes for 20 questions. Practise managing that time and deciding when to return to a difficult question.
Start with the free UAT-UK specification, Notes on Logic and Proof, and official practice tests. Use the Pearson test player to familiarise yourself with the interface, and review the reasoning behind both correct and incorrect answers.
YourDreamSchool’s TMUA preparation
YourDreamSchool works with students applying to Cambridge Computer Science and Economics as well as other TMUA universities. Our preparation covers:
- Paper 1 content review with targeted work on any gaps relative to the full TMUA syllabus
- Timed Paper 2 practice with performance analysis and worked solutions
- Coordination with your overall UK university application (UCAS personal statement, Cambridge interview preparation if applicable)
- Review of published score information and requirements for your target courses
TMUA preparation is available as a standalone programme or integrated into our UCAS or Oxbridge packages. Contact our team to discuss your specific application and what a realistic TMUA target looks like.
