What is the THE ranking?

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), published every autumn by the British magazine Times Higher Education, is one of the world’s three leading university rankings, alongside QS and the Shanghai Ranking. The 2026 edition assesses 2,191 universities from 115 countries.

Known for its focus on research and teaching, THE is closely followed by students aiming for demanding, research-oriented programmes. See also our QS 2026 ranking and our top 10 universities in the world.

Key takeaways from the 2026 edition

Oxford holds on to first place in the world for the tenth year in a row, driven by an outstanding research environment. Princeton achieves its best result ever, rising to 3rd place, tied with Cambridge. The United States has seven universities in the top 10, and the UK the other three (Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London). Asian universities also continue their rise.

The Times Higher Education methodology

THE groups its indicators into five main pillars: teaching quality, research environment (volume, income, reputation), research quality (citation impact), international outlook and industry links. Because this weighting is more research-focused than QS’s, the same university can be ranked differently from one league table to another.

THE, QS or Shanghai: which one should you look at?

THE emphasises research and teaching; QS rewards reputation and employability; the Shanghai Ranking mainly measures top-level research (Nobel Prizes, major publications). To build your university list, it is best to cross-check all three and look at the subject rankings.

French universities in the THE ranking

Among French institutions, Université PSL, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and Sorbonne Université are among the highest ranked. None reaches the world top 10, but several make the top 100 and stand out in certain subject rankings. A useful benchmark if you are weighing studying in France against applying abroad.

Get into a world-leading university with Your Dream School

Applying to a university in the THE ranking takes a strong application: a strategic choice of institutions, essays, recommendation letters, and preparation for tests (SAT, IELTS, TOEFL) and interviews. Since 2018, Your Dream School has been helping students get into the world’s best universities: more than 1,000 students supported.

Beyond the top 10: hidden gems worth knowing

Limiting your horizons to the top ten would be short-sighted. Many universities just below them offer outstanding programmes: the London School of Economics (LSE) in the social sciences, EPFL in engineering, Yale and Berkeley in the United States, not to mention the best Canadian, Australian and Dutch universities. The smart move: look at the ranking for your chosen subject rather than the overall ranking.

How to prepare your application starting in high school

Aiming for a top university takes early preparation, ideally from your second-to-last year of high school: strong grades, a coherent choice of subjects and an extracurricular profile (commitments, projects). In your final year, it is time for standardized tests (IELTS/TOEFL for English, SAT for the United States), followed by essays and recommendation letters. Watch the calendar: UCAS (UK) closes as early as January, while US universities stagger their deadlines between November and January. Coaching helps you plan ahead and submit the strongest possible application.

How to get into a world-leading university

The top universities in the THE ranking are highly selective, and each country has its own approach. In the United States, admission is holistic: grades, SAT/ACT scores, essays (Common App), recommendation letters and extracurricular activities all carry as much weight as your academic record. In the United Kingdom, you apply through UCAS with a targeted personal statement, sometimes an admissions test (LNAT, MAT, TMUA, STEP, ESAT) and an interview (Oxford, Cambridge). In continental Europe and Asia, each institution sets its own rules. The common denominator: an excellent academic record and a clear, personal plan.

How much do the top universities cost?

Fees vary widely from one country to another. In the United States, private Ivy League universities often exceed $60,000/year (tuition + housing), but offer generous need-based aid. In the United Kingdom, expect around £25,000 to £40,000/year for an international student, depending on the course. In continental Europe (e.g. ETH Zurich), fees are often far more moderate. Check each university’s official website.

Scholarships, aid and funding

Never rule out a university because of its cost until you have looked into the financial aid available. Several leading US universities are need-blind and cover a large share of costs for lower-income families; there are also merit scholarships, dedicated programmes (Fulbright, Chevening for master’s degrees) and student loans. A strong application often makes you eligible for more aid.

Why subject rankings matter

The overall ranking doesn’t tell the whole story. For a specific field, such as computer science, law, economics, engineering or medicine, subject rankings are often more relevant: a university ranked 30th overall can be in the world’s top 5 in your subject. Always compare the overall ranking with the ranking for your chosen subject before building your list.

Aim for the world’s top universities with Your Dream School

Getting into a top university takes a methodical approach. Your Dream School pairs each student with a mentor who studied at these universities in their subject, and prepares their strategy, essays / personal statement, tests (SAT, IELTS, TOEFL, Oxbridge tests) and interviews. In eight years: more than 1,000 students supported and 1,100+ offers of admission from 107 universities, including 650+ offers of admission in the UK.

Figures taken from our admissions database, classes of 2019 to 2025. These are minimums: the 2017-2018 and 2025-2026 classes have not yet been consolidated.

Choosing between several offers of admission

Receiving several offers is a great problem to have… but you still need to make a decision. Beyond the university’s overall ranking, weigh up the ranking in your chosen subject, the total cost (fees + living costs, minus scholarships), career prospects and the alumni network, the location and course format, and, often underestimated, your gut feeling from open days or conversations with current students. The best university isn’t always the highest-ranked one: it’s the one that best fits the student’s goals.

Mistakes to avoid in an international application

Four mistakes come up again and again. Starting too late: an outstanding application is built over months, not weeks. Treating the personal statement like a cover letter: for UK universities, it is closer to a short research paper in the subject. Neglecting the tests (SAT, IELTS, or the Oxbridge tests LNAT, MAT, STEP…), which require specific preparation. And building an unbalanced list by targeting only out-of-reach universities. Expert support helps you avoid each of these pitfalls.

Studying at a world-leading university: what comes after graduation?

A degree from a leading university opens doors for years to come. Beyond the name on your CV, what makes the difference is the alumni network, access to top employers (consulting, finance, tech, research), internships and international mobility. Many students go on to a master’s degree or a first job abroad, while others return home to put this experience to good use. Either way, it’s a long-term investment: one of the best, according to the families we work with.

Why rankings change from year to year

Positions shift every year, and that’s normal. Ranking bodies regularly adjust their methodology (the weight given to research, sustainability, employability) and add new data and new institutions. There are also long-term trends, such as the rise of Asian universities. It’s therefore better to look at the trend over several years than at a one-off change, and never to base a decision on a single ranking from a single edition.

Public or private universities: what’s the difference?

Depending on the country, a university’s status makes a big difference. In the United States, the leading private universities (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT) charge high fees but offer substantial scholarships, while public universities (Berkeley, UCLA) are more affordable, especially for residents. In the United Kingdom, most leading universities are public, with regulated international fees. In continental Europe, public universities dominate, and fees are often moderate. This factor has a direct impact on your budget and application strategy.

Frequently asked questions

When is the THE ranking published?

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are usually published in October. The 2026 edition is the most recent.

What’s the difference between THE and QS?

THE focuses on research and teaching, while QS focuses on reputation and employability. The two complement each other.

Is the ranking enough to make a choice?

No: the programme, the country, the cost and how well it fits your goals matter at least as much.

I wanted to express my immense gratitude to My Dream School for their support throughout Grégoire's university application process in England and Spain. From the very beginning, they were present, available, and remarkably professional. Thanks to their guidance, expertise, and support, Grégoire was delighted to receive offers of admission from prestigious universities such as UCL, King's College London, and IE University. We would especially like to thank Adam for his support during the release of the Baccalaureate results. Grégoire's score on the Grand Oral exam, well below our expectations, jeopardized several of his admissions, particularly that of IE, which requires a minimum Baccalaureate level. This was a particularly stressful time for our entire family. During this difficult period, My Dream School provided invaluable support. They guided us calmly and efficiently, prepared the necessary letters, advised us on the steps to take, and helped us present the situation in the best possible light. Their responsiveness, experience, and commitment made all the difference. Today, Grégoire is preparing to join IE University, after considering King's College London, where he had also been accepted. This is a fantastic opportunity for him, and we know that your support greatly contributed to this success. Thank you, Adam and Laurence, for your availability and dedication. We are very grateful. Grégoire is thrilled to begin this new adventure, and we share his joy completely.

I highly recommend Your Dream School to help your children/teenagers succeed in their exams. My son was accepted to Sciences Po Paris. Adam is not only very responsive and available, but he also immediately understands your needs. He will connect you with various tutors who are Sciences Po students themselves and will perfectly optimize your oral exam preparation. This is essential preparation because the oral exam is very specific. You will benefit from a great deal of flexibility in choosing the students, scheduling, and frequency, for example. It's a tailor-made approach that allows you to feel confident for the oral exam. My son was fortunate to be able to train in the best possible conditions with Emma and then Jeanne. Their dedication was crucial. My son was accepted to Sciences Po on his preferred campus. I can only thank Adam and his entire team!

I had the opportunity to work with Yash and Jess throughout this year, and I couldn't have asked for better coaches. Yash guided me through my Personal Statement for the UK, while Jess helped me with my Common App and additional essays for the US. They were both incredibly supportive, backing my ideas while also pushing me to develop them further. We spent countless hours working and reworking my essays until we were all happy with the final result. Even outside of our calls, they took the time to give me detailed feedback so I could continue to improve my applications. They dedicated an enormous amount of time and energy to my application, and I am deeply grateful. They helped me rephrase certain sections to make them clearer, while still preserving my voice and authenticity in my writing. I highly recommend Jess and Yash to any student applying to the UK and USA!

We are absolutely delighted with the support our daughter received. Thanks to their professionalism, expertise, and dedication, she was able to take top-quality English lessons and successfully prepare for her IELTS exam. Beyond English, the team also coached her for her business school entrance interviews. Their advice was invaluable, relevant, and perfectly tailored to her goals. They helped her build confidence, structure her presentations, and highlight her strengths. The results far exceeded our expectations: our daughter performed exceptionally well in her interviews and gained remarkable confidence. We particularly appreciated their availability, attentiveness, kindness, and ability to personalize their support. They are a passionate team truly committed to their students' success. A huge thank you for your help and support. We wholeheartedly recommend their services to all families who want to give their children the best possible chance of academic and professional success.

I had the opportunity to be primarily guided by Adam for the academic guidance and Lawrence for building my application. Like my brother a few years ago, I am delighted with the results we achieved, particularly SOAS for my brother and King's College London for me. YDS adapts to each individual's profile and was very responsive whenever I needed help. I also greatly appreciated the teaching methods and support of my coach during my GRE preparation. I highly recommend them!
