Parcoursup, Sciences Po and France’s Elite Track 2027: What International Families Need to Know

Back-to-school season in France means one question comes up in almost every family conversation: when does the French university admissions process actually start? For families weighing France against a UK, US or other international track, the answer matters, because the French system runs on its own clock, and it starts earlier than most people assume. The real Parcoursup 2027 timeline

Parcoursup is France’s centralized platform for undergraduate admissions, roughly the French equivalent of UCAS. The official 2027 calendar has not been published yet by the Ministry of Higher Education. Based on prior cycles, the expected milestones are:

• Mid-December 2026: the information phase opens (program criteria, admission-rate data, public reports on prior application cycles)
• Third week of January 2027: the wish-list phase opens, with up to 10 non-ranked wishes per candidate
• Early April 2027 (around April 2, to be confirmed): deadline to finalize the application file and confirm wishes
• Early June 2027: the main admissions phase begins

These dates are provisional and will need to be reconfirmed once the ministry publishes the final calendar. What will not change is the underlying logic: the platform only transmits a file that is written between September and March. A student’s Year 12 (Première) grades count as much as senior-year grades, and the teacher evaluation record (fiche Avenir) is built through the relationship with each teacher across the year, not in the weeks before wishes are submitted.

Sciences Po and the prépas: a second, already-confirmed deadline

For families targeting one of France’s elite Institutes of Political Studies (IEPs) outside Paris, one date is already official and verified: the written exams for the Réseau ScPo joint competitive exam (the seven regional IEPs) will take place on Saturday, April 24, 2027. Three exams in a single day: current affairs essay on the themes “peace” and “the living world” (3 hours, coefficient 3), history (2 hours, coefficient 3), and a foreign-language paper (1 hour, coefficient 2). This exam does not consider a candidate’s school transcript at all; admission is decided entirely on these three papers.

Sciences Po Paris runs its own separate process (file review and oral interview, weighted equally), generally channeled through Parcoursup for French-curriculum applicants. The classe préparatoire (prépa) track, by contrast, is decided purely on the academic file, through standard Parcoursup review. Three tracks, three different selection logics, meaning an average file on one route can be a strong one on another.

Why the international route matters here

This is the part most international families miss: Sciences Po is not limited to its Paris or regional campuses. The institution currently runs ten international bachelor’s-level dual degrees with partner universities, including Columbia, UC Berkeley, University College London, LUISS, Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Hong Kong, Keio, the National University of Singapore, the University of British Columbia and the University of Sydney, alongside six French dual degrees and a newly announced partnership with ESCP Business School. Applications to these dual degrees go directly to the partner institution, outside Parcoursup, on a separate timeline that starts in the fall. It is exactly the kind of door that can close before a family has even identified it.

In practice, this means a French bachelor’s application, a prépa application and an international application are not mutually exclusive tracks. Families with the strongest applications tend to keep all three open through January, because the cost of preparing several routes in parallel is small compared to the cost of discovering a closed deadline in February.
