Three UK league tables for 2027, one identical verdict: Durham University sits 6th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 6th in the Guardian University Guide and 6th in the Complete University Guide. No other English university outside the top five shows that kind of consistency this year. It is no fluke either: last year Durham was named University of the Year 2026 by the Times and Sunday Times, ahead of Oxford and Cambridge. For international applicants who want a top British degree without betting everything on Oxbridge, Durham is one of the smartest names to put on a UCAS form before the 13 January 2027 deadline. Here is what the rankings actually say, and how to apply.

What the 2027 rankings really show

In the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, Durham ranks 6th and takes the title of University of the Year for the North and North East of England. The subject level tells the fuller story: 30 subjects sit in the national top 10, including 16 in the top 5. Archaeology and Classics and Ancient History are ranked first in the country, Music is 2nd, and Mathematics climbs four places to 7th.

The Guardian University Guide 2027 lands on the same 6th place, with 19 subjects in the national top five, up from 16 last year: Sports Science and Accounting are ranked first, Biology, English and Education 2nd, Physics and International Relations 3rd. The Complete University Guide 2027 also places Durham 6th. Internationally, Durham has just climbed nine places to 85th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, with employer reputation ranked in the global top 50: a metric worth watching if you care about what happens after graduation.

A collegiate experience without the Oxbridge gauntlet

What sets Durham apart from almost every other UK university is its collegiate system. Founded in 1832, the university has 17 colleges: every student joins a human-scale community that runs its own accommodation (catered or self-catered), sports teams, societies and events. You rank your college preferences once you hold an offer, not before. In practice, it delivers much of the Oxford and Cambridge experience without the interviews and the battery of admissions tests that come with an Oxbridge application.

Entry requirements: A-levels, IB and the French bac

Standard offers at Durham typically range around the top A-level bands. Law (LLB) asks for A*AA or 37 IB points with 766 at higher level. Durham also publishes a clear grid for the French baccalauréat: an A*A*A offer translates to an overall average of 17/20 with 17 in required subjects, A*AA to 16 with 16, AAA to 15 with 16 in required subjects, and AAB to 14 with 15. Required subjects must have been taken as spécialités in both years of lycée, and OIB and BFI students get thresholds roughly one point lower. For English, Durham works in bands by subject: IELTS 7.0 with no component under 6.5 for the most demanding programmes, or 6.5 with no component under 6.0 for the others.

Applying for Law? Watch the LNAT date

One programme deserves a deadline alert: Law. Durham requires the LNAT and describes it as an essential requirement before your application is even considered. You can only sit the test once per cycle and scores do not carry over between years. The critical detail is the calendar: for Durham, the LNAT must be sat by 13 January 2027, earlier than the general 25 January limit that applies to most other LNAT universities. If Law is on your list, book your test slot now.

Where Durham fits in your university list

Durham is not subject to the early 15 October deadline reserved for Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science: the date that matters is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, the equal consideration deadline confirmed by UCAS. In a balanced reach, match and safety list, Durham plays a valuable role: for very strong applicants it is a demanding but realistic target alongside an Oxbridge attempt, and for outstanding ones it is a plan that never feels like a fallback, thanks to the colleges and that top 50 global employer reputation. If you are comparing options at this level, our review of Bath’s 2027 rankings shows how the rest of the top 10 stacks up. Our Oxbridge admissions pack sets out the extra October test and December interview steps if Oxford or Cambridge is also on your list.

Remember the mechanics: UCAS gives you five choices, offers from Durham are conditional on your final grades, and college preferences only come into play after you hold that offer. That means your job between now and January is not to pick a college but to make sure your predicted grades, subject combination and personal statement put you safely inside the offer thresholds above. Applicants from education systems other than A-levels, the IB or the French bac should check Durham’s country pages, as the university publishes equivalences for a wide range of qualifications.

Get your strategy checked before you submit

There are just over three months left before 13 January, and only weeks if your plans include Law and its LNAT. Now is the time to finalise your university list, check that your subjects match each course’s requirements and build a personal statement that speaks to British admissions tutors, which is exactly what our UCAS admissions counselling covers. Your Dream School’s counsellors, rated by 160+ Google reviews, guide students into Durham and the UK’s top universities every year. Book your strategy call to review your application.
