Three UK league tables for 2027 landed in September, and one university sits in the top 10 of all of them without ever making the headlines: Bath. 8th in the Guardian University Guide 2027 (out of 123 institutions), 8th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027 (out of 130), 9th in the Complete University Guide 2027. For international applicants targeting the UK, this is one of the smartest opportunities on the table right now: top-tier academics, outstanding employability, and an entry bar that is far more attainable than Oxford, Cambridge or LSE.
What the 2027 rankings actually say
In the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, Bath ranks 8th in the UK and first in the South West of England, with standout subject positions: 2nd for sport science, 3rd for social work and for criminology, 4th for social policy.
The Guardian University Guide 2027, published on 14 September, also places Bath 8th and awards it two distinctions that matter to a future student: number one in the UK for graduate happiness, and joint 5th for the proportion of graduates progressing into graduate-level employment within 15 months, with 88% of graduates in graduate-level jobs. By subject, Bath sits 3rd for education, mechanical engineering and sport science, 4th for accounting and finance, and in the top 5 for aeronautical engineering, criminology, and pharmacy and pharmacology.
The Complete University Guide 2027 completes the picture: 9th overall, 6th for graduate prospects, and top in the South West for the tenth year running. Internationally, Bath ranks 125th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, with a 91st place worldwide for employer reputation, and holds a triple Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023, the highest UK distinction for teaching quality.
The feature that changes everything: the placement year
Bath’s real signature, and the engine behind its employability numbers, is the placement year. On most courses, year three is spent in industry on a long professional placement. Take the BSc Management with Work Placement (2027 entry): four years in total, including a full placement year backed by links with over 400 companies. The university states that placements are real jobs and usually paid, with an average UK placement salary of £25,682 in 2024-25. Fifteen months after graduation, the average salary for Bath’s business and management graduates reaches £35,500 according to Discover Uni (2025).
For an international student weighing a business school against a UK university, the argument is concrete: at Bath, substantial work experience is built into the degree, at a national top 10 institution.
What it takes to get in
Good news: unlike some other top 10 universities, Bath imposes no external admissions test on its flagship courses. In mathematics, the university even states explicitly that from 2025 onwards it no longer considers additional maths tests such as STEP, MAT or TMUA for applicants taking Maths and Further Maths. That is a real difference from Warwick, where the TMUA can play a central role in maths and economics admissions: at Bath, everything comes down to your grades, your file and your personal statement.
Requirements vary by course. A few reference points verified on the official course pages:
- BSc Management with Work Placement (2027 entry): the typical offer is AAA or A*AB at A level, with equivalent thresholds for the IB and other international qualifications.
- BSc Mathematics: the typical offer is A*A*A including A* and A in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and the published grid for the French Baccalaureat asks for 15 overall with 17 in the maths speciality and 15 in advanced maths (grid displayed for 2026 entry, to be confirmed on the 2027 course page).
- English: IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in each component) on many science courses, 7.0 (no less than 6.5) in management. Book your test early in the autumn.
The timeline: one date to remember
Bath recruits through UCAS, and the equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. In practice, that leaves less than four months to build a strong application: your five UCAS choices, the three-question personal statement, your school reference and proof of English.
