The University of Bristol heads into the 2027 admissions cycle with two strong signals for international applicants: it is ranked 57th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and it has kept its place in the UK top 10 of The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, which also named it South West University of the Year. If Bristol is on your UCAS shortlist, here is what these results actually change for your application, and the dates you now need to work towards.

Where Bristol stands in the 2027 rankings

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June 2026, Bristol is ranked 57th out of 1,504 universities from 106 countries, and 8th in the United Kingdom out of 93 ranked institutions, holding the same national position as last year. In the QS sustainability ranking, which measures environmental and social impact, Bristol places 19th in the world, in the global top 20 once again.

The national picture is just as solid. In The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, published in September 2026, Bristol retains its place among the top ten UK universities and takes the title of South West University of the Year 2027, with 22 courses ranked in the UK top 10 and 41 in the top 20. Few universities outside Oxford, Cambridge and London combine a global top 60 position with this kind of depth across subjects. You can find our full profile of the university on our study at the University of Bristol page.

The subjects behind the result

The 2027 Good University Guide is worth reading at subject level, because that is where course choices are made. Criminology, ranked separately for the first time this year, enters directly at 1st in the country. Aerospace engineering and social policy both place 3rd. Chemistry rises 5 places to 7th, breaking into the top ten, and English climbs 14 places to 29th. Outside the league tables, Bristol is joint 23rd in the People and Planet university league, 3rd among Russell Group universities, a point that matters to a growing number of our students who weigh sustainability in their choice.

For an applicant, the practical lesson is this: a university’s overall rank tells you about its brand, but the subject table tells you about your course. A candidate aiming for aerospace engineering or social sciences is looking at a national top 3 department here, which changes how Bristol should sit in a five-choice UCAS list. To see how it compares within its group, read our guide to the Russell Group and its 24 universities.

How to apply for 2027 entry: the dates that matter

Applications go through UCAS, with the institution code BRISL B78, and you can use up to five course choices on your form. The equal consideration deadline for undergraduate applications is Wednesday 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time. Bristol itself encourages applicants not to treat that date as a target: some courses fill quickly and may close to new applications on that day. The final deadline for international undergraduate applications is 30 June, but for a competitive course that is a fallback, not a plan. The 15 October 2026 deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science has already passed for 2027 entry.

One more detail from Bristol’s own admissions pages deserves attention: the university states that applying through a representative or agent gives you no advantage and no disadvantage, since all applications are considered on an equal basis. That is exactly as it should be. The value of being accompanied is not a shortcut into the university; it is the quality of the course list, the personal statement and the predicted grades strategy you submit. That work is the core of our UCAS admissions counselling.

What this means for your list

Bristol occupies a precise spot in a well-built UCAS strategy. It is selective, rising and internationally visible, yet it admits on a broader range of profiles than Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial or LSE. For strong candidates, it is one of the most reliable ways to hold a global top 60 offer alongside more uncertain bets at the very top of the tables. Many of our students pair it with universities such as Manchester or Queen Mary: see our analyses of Manchester’s 2027 rankings and Queen Mary’s 2027 results for the same exercise applied to those two.

Rising rankings usually mean rising application numbers, so the sensible response is to apply early in the cycle with a finished file, not in the January rush. If you are starting from scratch, our bachelor admissions counselling page explains how we build a five-choice list that combines ambition and safety.
