If you are building a UCAS list for 2027 entry, the University of Manchester deserves a close look this autumn. In February 2026, High Fliers Research named it the university most targeted by the UK’s top graduate employers, ahead of every other institution in the country. In June, the QS World University Rankings 2027 placed it 40th in the world. Those two facts answer different questions, and together they tell you a lot about what a Manchester degree is actually worth. Here is what the latest results mean for an international applicant, and how to get your application right before the UCAS deadline of 13 January 2027.

Number one with the employers who matter

The Graduate Market in 2026, the annual study by High Fliers Research based on interviews completed in December 2025 with 100 of the UK’s leading graduate employers, put Manchester back in first place as the most targeted university in the country, ahead of Birmingham, Nottingham, Warwick and UCL. Manchester had placed second in the 2025 edition.

The context makes this result more significant, not less. The same study found that the top 100 employers cut graduate hiring by 5.1% in 2025 and expect a further slight dip of 0.5% in 2026, bringing vacancies to their lowest level since 2012. On average, each employer now targets around 23 universities. When recruiters visit fewer campuses and hire fewer graduates, being on their shortlist becomes a real advantage: it means more on-campus recruiting events, more internship pipelines and more first interviews for Manchester students than for most of their peers.

For families comparing offers, this is the metric that measures outcomes rather than inputs. A university can climb a league table on research scores alone; it cannot top the High Fliers ranking unless employers actually come to hire.

Where Manchester stands in the 2027 rankings

The academic rankings published for 2027 are consistent with that picture. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, Manchester ranks 40th in the world among more than 1,500 institutions, with an overall score of 84.6, after 35th place the previous year. The detail is telling: 7th globally for international research collaboration, 10th for sustainability, 28th for employer reputation and 32nd for academic reputation.

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, Manchester sits 60th in the world out of 2,297 universities ranked, with a score of 74.8, and remains 8th in the UK. Domestically, the Guardian University Guide 2027 moved it up 15 places to 20th, and The Sunday Times Good University Guide named it Northwest University of the Year. For a Russell Group university of this size, holding a top 10 UK position internationally while climbing the domestic guides is a strong combination.

If you are weighing Manchester against other recently rising UK options, our reviews of Exeter’s 2027 results and Edinburgh’s 2027 results use the same lens.

What it takes to get in as an international student

Manchester publishes its entry requirements course by course, and its international pages direct applicants to country-specific information for both academic and English language requirements. Treat the course profile as the single source of truth: two programmes in the same faculty can ask for different grades and different English scores.

On English, the university indicates that undergraduate requirements are usually the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 to 7.0, or 5.5 for foundation courses, with the exact minimum specified on each course profile. Some courses also carry additional requirements, such as previous study of a particular subject, relevant work experience or written work submitted with the application.

Popular courses at a university this visible are heavily oversubscribed, so meeting the published grades is the entry ticket, not the differentiator. The personal statement, the reference and the coherence of your subject choices are what separate two applicants with identical predicted grades. That is exactly the work we do in our UCAS admissions counseling.

Key dates for 2027 entry

The deadline that matters now is 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027: UCAS confirms that applications for all 2027 entry undergraduate courses, except those with a 15 October deadline, must arrive by then to receive equal consideration. The 15 October 2026 deadline, which covered medicine and dentistry along with Oxford and Cambridge, has already passed.

Do not treat 13 January as a target. Referees get busy in December, predicted grades need to be settled with your school, and a personal statement worth sending takes several drafts. Applicants who finalise their UCAS choices in November give themselves room to fix problems; those who upload in the second week of January do not.
