The University of Exeter rarely dominates the headlines, and that is precisely what makes it interesting. While other universities swing up and down the league tables from one year to the next, Exeter has spent 2026 quietly confirming its position: 11th in the UK for the second year running, and its best result ever on the world stage. If you are building a UCAS list for 2027 entry, that consistency deserves a closer look.
What the 2027 league tables actually say
The Complete University Guide 2027, published on 2 June 2026, keeps Exeter in 11th place nationally, the same position as last year, and ranks it second among universities in the South West. The more telling figure sits below the headline: 24 Exeter subjects rank inside the national top 10, with Marketing in 2nd place. For applicants, that detail matters more than the overall rank, because you apply to a course, not to a brochure.
Two weeks later, on 18 June 2026, the QS World University Rankings 2027 delivered the bigger surprise: Exeter rose 19 places to 136th in the world, its highest position since the QS ranking began and its largest single-year rise. It now stands 21st in the UK on the QS table, up two places, with academic reputation, citations per faculty and employer reputation all improving. For a university that some international families still overlook, that is a meaningful signal, and it comes on top of Exeter’s long-standing membership of the Russell Group, the association of the UK’s leading research universities.
What this means for your UCAS list
Exeter occupies a specific and valuable slot in a well-built application: a university ranked just outside the UK top 10, with world-class strength in specific subjects, and entry requirements that remain attainable for strong international students. In the series of UK universities we have reviewed for 2027, Exeter is one of the clearest examples of a solid target choice: ambitious enough to be worth the effort, realistic enough to anchor a balanced list of five.
Our own admissions data points the same way: 29 of our students have been admitted to the University of Exeter, within more than 650 offers our students have received from UK universities. Figures taken from our admissions database, classes of 2019 to 2025. These are minimums: the 2017-2018 and 2025-2026 intakes are not yet consolidated. Students consistently tell us the campus experience lives up to the numbers: you can read our interviews with Aymeric, a Business and Management student at Exeter, and with Sigrid, who studied Economics and Econometrics there.
How to apply for 2027 entry
Exeter recruits through UCAS, like every UK university. With the 15 October deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses now behind us, the date that matters is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time: UCAS’s equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry. Every application received by that moment must be considered equally by the universities on your list; applications arriving later can be considered only if places remain. Our UCAS admissions counseling guide walks through the whole process step by step.
Three practical points deserve your attention now, in mid-October:
- Do not treat 13 January as a target. Exeter reviews applications through the autumn, and submitting in November or early December means your file is read while the cycle is still fresh, and leaves you margin if a reference or document is delayed.
- Check the entry requirements on your exact course page. Exeter publishes requirements course by course, and its English language requirements work through profiles, from Profile A to Profile G. Profile A courses ask for IELTS 6.0 overall with no section below 6.0, while Profile C courses ask for 6.5 overall with no section below 6.5. A long list of other tests is accepted, but most scores must be no more than 2 years old at the start of the programme, and Exeter verifies every score with the issuing body.
- Give the written part of the application real time. Your UCAS personal statement is read against the course you chose, so the reading list, the projects and the experiences you present should point clearly towards that subject. This is where most of the difference between a good and an average application is made.
If you are earlier in the process and still comparing destinations and universities, our bachelor admissions hub and our University of Exeter profile are the right starting points.
Our advice for the weeks ahead
A university that holds 11th place nationally while climbing to a record world ranking is not a fallback: it is a deliberate choice, and admissions tutors can tell the difference between a candidate who understands that and one who listed Exeter to fill a fifth slot. Treat the application with the same care as your most ambitious choice: a personal statement genuinely engaged with the subject, predicted grades presented honestly, and an English test booked early enough to retake if needed.
Your Dream School has guided more than 1,000 students since 2018, with 160+ Google reviews and a 5/5 rating. If you want an experienced eye on your school list and your UCAS application before the January deadline, book a strategic call with our team: we will tell you honestly where Exeter fits in your profile, and how to make your application stand out.
