The countdown is on. UCAS applications for 2027 entry have been open since 1 September 2026, but for candidates targeting Oxford, Cambridge, or most medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses in the UK, the window closes far earlier than it does for every other course. By 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, your application must have arrived at UCAS to receive equal consideration. That leaves one month.
Why this deadline is different
For the vast majority of UK courses, the official deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. But Oxford and Cambridge require every one of their courses, with no exception, to be submitted before 15 October. The same applies to almost all medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses at other UK universities (with a few exceptions, worth checking course by course on the UCAS search tool).
In practice, an applicant aiming for Oxford and, say, a backup university for a different course, has to complete the entire UCAS application, personal statement and choices included, before 15 October. You cannot “hold” an Oxbridge choice and finish the rest later, the whole application is submitted at that date.
A note on 2028: UCAS ran a consultation until April 2026 on a possible reform of the number of choices and the deadlines themselves. Nothing changes before the 2028 entry cycle at the earliest. The dates above are reliable for 2027 entry, but should be reconfirmed for a later intake.
The trap most families miss: admissions tests close before UCAS does
This is the least understood point, and the costliest one to miss. The pre-registered admissions tests required for many Oxford and Cambridge courses run on their own calendar, independent of UCAS, and it closes earlier.
TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions), required for PPE, Economics and Management, History and Economics, History and Politics, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology and PPL at Oxford: booking closes on 28 September 2026, less than two weeks from today. The test itself runs from 12 to 16 October 2026.
ESAT (Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Veterinary Medicine) and TMUA (Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics) at Cambridge follow the same calendar: registration closes 28 September, test window 12 to 16 October.
LNAT, required for Law at Cambridge (and for Politics, Philosophy and Law at King’s College London, before 31 December), runs on its own session calendar, worth checking directly at the point of registration. For medicine, candidates generally sit the UCAT, on a different timeline again. Check the calendar for each specific test now, do not assume anything.
In other words, if your child is applying to Oxford for PPE or Cambridge for engineering, the real deadline is not 15 October, it is 28 September, for the test booking. Waiting until mid-October to deal with it is already too late.
What to lock down in the next four weeks
Book the relevant admissions test (TARA, ESAT or TMUA) before 28 September, at an approved Pearson VUE centre for candidates outside the UK. Finalise the personal statement: the format has changed, it is now three answers to set questions, 4,000 characters in total, with a minimum of 350 characters per answer, no longer a single free-form text. Secure the academic reference from the school, often the single biggest bottleneck in the applications we support, since schools outside the UK are not always familiar with the exercise and need to be approached early. Confirm the college choice at Oxford or Cambridge, and for some courses (languages, history, English), prepare for tests set directly by the college on interview day, with no prior registration required. Submit before 15 October at 18:00, with a 24 to 48 hour safety margin built in, an application arriving at 18:01 is no longer considered on equal terms.
Five choices, one strategic decision
UCAS caps the total number of choices at five, across both the Oxbridge and January deadlines. A candidate applying to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same cycle uses up two of those five choices at once (applying to both in the same year is, in fact, not allowed, except in rare cases). That leaves three choices for safety options, best split between related courses and universities with more accessible entry requirements. This is a decision to make with actual grades and mock test results in hand, not in a scramble during the last week of September.
