University College Groningen

University College Groningen (UCG) is the honours college in liberal arts and sciences of the University of Groningen, one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most respected research universities. Founded in 2014, it offers a three-year, English-taught Bachelor organised around major societal challenges, in one of the country’s liveliest student cities.

UCG combines a broad, interdisciplinary curriculum with project-based learning, encouraging students to apply what they learn to real-world problems from their first year.

Official website: rug.nl/ucg

The programme

UCG offers a three-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Liberal Arts and Sciences, taught in English. Students choose a major across sciences, social sciences and humanities and work on interdisciplinary projects tied to societal challenges, combining academic study with practical application.

Small classes, close mentoring and a strong project component prepare graduates for competitive Master’s programmes and a range of careers.

How do I apply?

What the application includes

UCG selects through its own procedure. Applications generally include academic transcripts and predicted grades, a motivation letter, references, proof of English, and an interview. A broad, strong academic record is valued.

Selection criteria

UCG looks for motivated, curious students who want an interdisciplinary, project-based education and will contribute to a close community. Motivation and fit matter alongside academic results.

Tuition fees and living costs

As selective honours programmes, Dutch university colleges charge higher tuition than standard Dutch bachelor’s degrees, and non-EU/EEA students pay more than EU students; many programmes are residential, so factor in on-campus accommodation. The Netherlands remains more affordable than the UK or US overall. Confirm current tuition, the EU vs non-EU rate and living costs on the official website before applying.

Why students choose University College Groningen

Students choose UCG for its project-based approach, the academic strength of the University of Groningen, and the city’s famous student life. It suits students who want to combine a broad liberal arts education with hands-on, real-world projects in an affordable, energetic city.

Campus, location and student life

UCG sits within the University of Groningen, in a city where roughly a quarter of the population are students, giving it one of the best-known student atmospheres in Europe. Groningen is compact, bike-friendly, safe and affordable, with a rich cultural and nightlife scene, and English is widely spoken across the university and city.

When should I start preparing?

Dutch university colleges select on more than grades, so start 12 to 18 months ahead. That gives time to sit an English test if needed, write a strong motivation letter, gather references and prepare for an interview. Early preparation also lets you build the well-rounded profile these colleges look for — exactly the support Your Dream School provides.
