Study at Amsterdam University College

Amsterdam University College

Amsterdam University College (AUC) is the honours college in liberal arts and sciences created jointly by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), two of the Netherlands’ leading research universities. Founded in 2009, it offers a single, broad, English-taught Bachelor (Honours) and is based at Amsterdam Science Park, with students living together on campus.

AUC’s model is deliberately interdisciplinary: students combine sciences, social sciences and humanities, and design a path around the questions that interest them, while benefiting from the research resources of both founding universities.

The programme

AUC offers a three-year Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Liberal Arts and Sciences, taught entirely in English. Students choose a major — Sciences, Social Sciences or Humanities — and build a personalised curriculum, with small seminar-style classes and an emphasis on academic writing, critical thinking and “big questions” courses.

The college encourages breadth before depth: students take courses across disciplines in the early years before specialising, and many go on to competitive Master’s programmes across Europe and beyond.

How do I apply?

What the application includes

AUC selects through its own procedure (not the standard numerus fixus lottery). A complete application typically includes your academic transcripts and predicted grades, a motivation letter, references, proof of English, and often an online interview. Strong results in a broad range of subjects help.

Selection criteria

AUC looks for intellectually curious, motivated students who thrive in a small, international, residential community. Beyond grades, the motivation letter and interview are central — admissions tutors want to see genuine interest in interdisciplinary study and the maturity to make the most of an honours environment.

Tuition fees and living costs

As selective honours programmes, Dutch university colleges charge higher tuition than standard Dutch bachelor’s degrees, and non-EU/EEA students pay more than EU students; many programmes are residential, so factor in on-campus accommodation. The Netherlands remains more affordable than the UK or US overall. Confirm current tuition, the EU vs non-EU rate and living costs on the official website before applying.

Why students choose Amsterdam University College

Students choose AUC for its interdisciplinary freedom, its small international community and the resources of two major universities behind it. Located in one of Europe’s most dynamic cities, AUC suits students who want flexibility, intellectual breadth and a genuinely global classroom before specialising at Master’s level.

Campus, location and student life

AUC is residential: most students live in a dedicated building at Amsterdam Science Park, a short ride from the city centre, which builds a close-knit community. Amsterdam itself is vibrant, international and highly bike-friendly, with world-class culture and excellent transport links across Europe. English is spoken almost everywhere, making it easy for international students to settle in.

When should I start preparing?

Dutch university colleges select on more than grades, so start 12 to 18 months ahead. That gives time to sit an English test if needed, write a strong motivation letter, gather references and prepare for an interview. Early preparation also lets you build the well-rounded profile these colleges look for — exactly the support Your Dream School provides.
