The Guardian published its UK university rankings for 2027 on 12 September, and one result caught the eye of families targeting Scotland: the University of St Andrews slipped from 2nd to 4th place. Should that worry you, or even change your school list? Our answer is clear: no. The move says very little about what actually decides an application to St Andrews. It is, however, a good moment to look at what this university really requires from international applicants, and why the timeline matters now, with less than four months to the UCAS deadline of 13 January 2027.
What the 2026 and 2027 rankings actually say
In the Guardian University Guide 2027, published on 12 September 2026, Oxford holds first place for the third year in a row, ahead of Cambridge (2nd) and LSE (3rd). St Andrews follows in 4th with a score of 94.6, ahead of Imperial College (5th), with Warwick (7th) and Bath (8th) also in the top ten.
That two-place drop needs context. A year earlier, St Andrews was 2nd in the Guardian 2026, behind only Oxford. In the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026 it was also 2nd in the UK and first in Scotland, with eight subjects ranked number one nationally, including French, History, International Relations, Physics and Chemistry. And it is worth remembering that in 2019 St Andrews became the first UK university to break the Oxford and Cambridge duopoly at the top of national league tables, before taking first place in the Guardian in 2022 and 2023.

A two-place swing tells you nothing about the teaching you would receive in 2027, and it certainly will not make admission any easier.
What St Andrews really requires
St Andrews publishes precise entry requirements by country and qualification, all verified today on the university’s official pages. For the French Baccalauréat, for example, it asks for an overall score of 16 out of 20, with 17 in the subjects required by the chosen degree; for the Baccalauréat Français International (BFI), 15 overall with 16 in required subjects. The pattern is the same across international qualifications: a strong overall result, plus higher marks in the specific subjects the degree names.
One detail eliminates applications every year: where a degree has required subjects, they must have been studied at the appropriate level in the final two years of school. Dropping the wrong subject in your last year closes doors regardless of your average.
