Study at universities in Scotland
Explore Scottish universities, UCAS applications, course lengths and tuition fees.
Scotland offers a wide choice of university courses and student communities, including at the universities of St Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Compare the content, entry requirements and costs of each course before building your shortlist. Tuition fees and funding depend on your individual fee status; European nationality alone does not make tuition free.
Entry requirements vary by university and programme. Check the qualifications, required subjects, grades and English-language evidence for every course you are considering.
Build an application that explains your academic interests, preparation and suitability for your chosen courses.
Applying to Scottish universities
What does an undergraduate application involve?
Most undergraduate applications are made through UCAS. You will provide your qualifications, an academic reference and a personal statement. From 2026 entry onwards, the statement has three questions, with a shared limit of 4,000 characters and at least 350 characters per answer. Interviews, admissions tests and English-language tests depend on the course. See the UCAS personal statement guidance.
2027 entry: the equal-consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses have an earlier deadline of 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. Check your specific course and the official UCAS deadlines.
Course length and study format
- Many Scottish undergraduate honours degrees take four years. Some programmes are shorter or longer; certain courses allow direct entry to Year 2.
- Postgraduate duration depends on the qualification and whether you study full-time or part-time. Check the individual programme.
Tuition fees and funding: universities set fees by programme and fee status. EU students starting a new course are generally charged international fees unless they meet an eligible category and the relevant residence conditions. SAAS support is not automatic. Ask the university to confirm your fee status and check Scotland.org’s fees and funding guidance before planning your budget.
Teaching hours and independent study vary by subject. For an example of the four-year structure, see the University of Edinburgh’s degree guide.
