At 6pm UK time on 15 October, your UCAS application to Oxford or Cambridge locks. Many families treat that date as the finish line. It is the opposite: between submission and the final decision in January sit three intense months, punctuated by deadlines the universities rarely advertise loudly, and missing one can sink an otherwise excellent application. Here is what actually happens, week by week, with the official dates for 2027 entry verified today.

15 October: what the deadline actually locks

The UCAS deadline of 6pm (UK time) on 15 October 2026 applies to all Oxford and Cambridge applications, as well as medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses nationwide. After that hour, nothing can be changed: not the course, not the college, not the personal statement. If you are still weighing your college choice, our guide to choosing an Oxford or Cambridge college helps you decide before the cutoff.

One detail law applicants often discover too late: at Cambridge, the LNAT window for the 2027 cycle runs from 1 September to 15 October. The test must be sat by deadline day itself, not after.

12 to 16 October: admissions test week

The ESAT and TMUA take place from 12 to 16 October 2026, the very week of the deadline. Candidates in engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, computer science or economics are therefore finalising their application and sitting their test at the same time. Results are released on 16 November 2026.

A January sitting exists (tests from 4 to 8 January 2027, booking open from 26 October to 21 December 2026, £78 in the UK and £133 elsewhere), but be careful: for an Oxbridge application submitted on 15 October, the October sitting is the one that counts. The January window serves other universities and other timelines. We covered the system in detail in our article on ESAT, TMUA and TARA registration.

22 October: the form Cambridge applicants miss most

One week after UCAS, Cambridge imposes a second deadline: the My Cambridge Application questionnaire, due by 6pm UK time on 22 October 2026. It arrives by email after you submit through UCAS. Because no other UK university has an equivalent step, it is the single most commonly missed item among international applicants: watch your inbox, spam folder included, from the moment your application goes in.

The same date applies to Cambridge’s international applicants for transcripts, and for flagging any extenuating circumstances.

5 and 10 November: written work

Depending on the course, one or more pieces of written work (school-marked essays) must be submitted: by 5 November 2026 for Cambridge, together with the interview adjustment form where relevant, and by 10 November 2026 for Oxford, sent directly to the college with a cover sheet. Choose these pieces carefully: they often feed the interview conversation, and a text you cannot defend becomes a trap in December.

Mid-November to mid-December: shortlisting, then interviews

Oxford publishes figures worth knowing: over 23,000 applications for around 3,300 places each year, with approximately 10,000 candidates shortlisted for interview. An invitation is already a real milestone, and it comes fast: invitations usually go out between mid-November and early December, sometimes with only a week’s notice.

Oxford interviews are held online, in early to mid-December 2026. Cambridge interviews run from 4 to 18 December 2026. In practice, this means interview preparation cannot wait for the invitation: serious candidates start training in November, on thinking-aloud exercises rather than rehearsed answers. That work sits at the heart of our Oxbridge admissions pack.

January: decisions, and Cambridge’s second chance

Oxford will release its decisions on 12 January 2027. Cambridge works in two stages: in mid-January, the winter pool lets a college rescue a strong candidate another college could not take for lack of places, and decision letters go out in late January. Being pooled is not a rejection: every year, applicants receive an offer from a college they never named.

What this calendar means for your strategy

The lesson fits in one sentence: everything is chained, and catch-up windows are rare. A forgotten My Cambridge Application, written work sent late or an interview prepared in eight days can neutralise an excellent academic record. A candidate who knows these deadlines, by contrast, keeps their energy for what matters: the substance.

At Your Dream School, we have coached 12 students admitted to Oxford and 3 to Cambridge (figures from our admissions database, cohorts 2019 to 2025; these are minimums, as the 2017-2018 and 2025-2026 cohorts are not yet consolidated), and our UCAS admissions counseling covers exactly this post-submission phase: tests, written work and mock interviews with Oxbridge-educated coaches. Our families have left us 160+ Google reviews.

Your application goes in on 15 October and you want a clear plan for what follows? Book a strategic call: we will map your real deadlines and your interview preparation.
