While most applicants are focused on the UCAS deadline of 15 October, another window opened this Wednesday, 1 October: Canada. McGill’s online application for Fall 2027 entry is now live, and Ontario’s centralised system runs on the same clock. On paper, you have until mid January. In practice, the Canadian system strongly rewards students who file in the autumn. Here is what this opening actually changes for an international applicant, and how to fit Canada into a wider application strategy.

The confirmed dates for Fall 2027

Three dates structure the Canadian cycle, all checked today on the official websites.

First, the opening: since 1 October, McGill’s online application for Fall 2027 is open. The application fee is 140.16 CAD, non refundable.

Second, the closing date: for applicants studying, or who last studied, in a high school outside Canada and the United States, which covers most international candidates, the deadline is Friday 15 January 2027. It applies to most undergraduate programs: Arts, Science, Engineering, Management, Architecture, Nursing and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Third, Ontario: the OUAC application centre uses the same cutoff. International applicants (the 105 application) and Ontario high school students alike must submit a completed application by 15 January 2027. Ontario universities commit to responding by 28 May 2027 at the latest, and no university can require you to reply to an offer before 1 June 2027, which leaves time to compare with your UK or US results.

Why applying early genuinely improves your odds

Canada works on rolling admission. McGill releases decisions continuously: on the most recent cycle displayed by the university, international applicants received their decisions between mid November and mid May. In other words, a file submitted in October can be admitted before Christmas, while a file submitted on 14 January will often wait until spring.

This is not just about comfort. An early McGill admission becomes the anchor of your whole strategy: you walk into UK interviews and US decision season already holding a place at a world class university.

Entrance scholarships follow the same calendar logic. McGill’s official advice is to look into them early: the scholarship deadline usually falls a week after your application deadline. A file completed at the last minute rarely leaves time to build a strong scholarship application.

The McGill file, seen from an international classroom

A Canadian application is lighter than a British or American one: no UCAS style personal statement for most programs, no systematic recommendation letters. The evaluation rests first on your grades, which is excellent news for consistent students, and one more reason to protect your final two years of transcripts. Our page on McGill University admission breaks down what the university expects, program by program.

Then comes proof of English, which is often underestimated. McGill’s official minimum scores are clear: IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, TOEFL iBT 90 for most programs, or Duolingo English Test 125. Watch out if you are targeting the Desautels Faculty of Management: the Bachelor of Commerce requires TOEFL 100 or Duolingo 130. Some profiles are exempt, notably after four consecutive years of schooling in English, with IB English A at 5 or above, or an A-Level in English at grade C or better. If you are not exempt, book an IELTS or TOEFL session before the end of December, and remember that scores must be sent directly by the testing organisation: McGill does not accept uploaded results.

What about Ontario?

For Toronto, Waterloo, Queen’s or Western, everything goes through OUAC. The official 2027 calendar sends application data and grades to the universities on 21 January, with decisions released up to 28 May. Here too, places and scholarships in the most competitive programs, computer science and engineering first among them, are often settled well before the formal deadline. Our guide to studying in Canada compares universities, costs and the study permit process.

Canada as the cornerstone of a balanced list

What makes Canada strategically valuable is its calendar: applications open after the Oxbridge deadline and close after the US early rounds, with most decisions arriving while other systems are still deliberating. It therefore combines naturally with a UCAS application filed this autumn. That interplay between systems is exactly what we describe in our method for building a university list with reach, match and safety options.

And if you are weighing Canada against other English speaking destinations, our comparison of the best study abroad destinations puts tuition, admission rates and post study options side by side.

Your October action plan

If Canada is on your list, here is the tempo we recommend to our students: create your account and start the application in October, book your English test for November or early December, submit the complete file before the Christmas break, and deal with the scholarship application right after. You turn a January deadline into a potential December admission.

Canada is rarely prepared on its own. For the UK file that goes out the same autumn, our page on admissions counselling for UCAS applications sets out the 15 October and 13 January deadlines, while our overview of bachelor admission at the top universities compares the systems country by country. Families running several systems at once will also find the sequencing in our guide to college counselling for international students.

Every year, the Your Dream School team guides international students into McGill, Toronto and Canada’s leading universities, backed by 160+ Google reviews. Official sources consulted on 1 October 2026: mcgill.ca (online application open as of 1 October, non-refundable application fee of 140.16 CAD) and ouac.on.ca for the Ontario calendar. English thresholds and closing dates should be reconfirmed on each university’s own site before you submit an application.
