Update 18 October 2026: registration for the 7 November SAT closes on 23 October. See our three week plan for the 7 November SAT.

The UCAS deadline of 15 October closes tomorrow, and for many international students the pressure now shifts across the Atlantic. The next date that matters in the United States is Sunday 1 November 2026: the Early Decision and Early Action deadline at most of the selective American universities. We checked the official admissions pages today, on 14 October, and here is what actually closes in 18 days, what it changes depending on the type of early plan, and how to use the two and a half weeks you have left.

What actually closes on 1 November

Columbia confirms Sunday 1 November 2026 as its Early Decision deadline for the 2026-2027 cycle, with Regular Decision following on 1 January 2027. Columbia’s Early Decision is binding: if you are admitted, you commit to enrol.

Harvard’s Restrictive Early Action also closes on 1 November, at 11:59 pm in your local time zone, with decisions released in mid-December and Regular Decision on 1 January. A detail worth knowing when you are chasing teachers for letters: Harvard allows counsellors to submit supporting materials up to one week after the deadline. Your own application, however, must be in on time.

Yale’s Single-Choice Early Action closes on 1 November as well, with decisions in mid-December and Regular Decision on 2 January. MIT’s Early Action has the same 1 November deadline, decisions in mid-December, and a Regular Action deadline of 4 January.

In other words, four of the most selective universities in the world all expect your complete file on the same Sunday evening. Most other American universities with early plans cluster around the same date, which is why 1 November has become the real opening night of the US admissions season.

One date, three different games

The trap for international candidates is to treat “early” as a single concept. It is not, and the rules differ sharply.

Early Decision, Columbia’s model, is a binding commitment: one university, one promise to attend if admitted. Early Action, MIT’s model, is non-binding and non-restrictive: you can apply early elsewhere and you have until the spring to decide. Between the two sit Harvard’s Restrictive Early Action and Yale’s Single-Choice Early Action: non-binding, but you may not apply early to another private American university at the same time.

One nuance matters enormously for our students: Harvard’s published rules allow early applications to public universities, and to non-US universities under non-binding programmes. A UCAS application already submitted this week does not conflict with a Harvard REA candidacy. You can keep your British options fully alive while playing an American early card. We walk through the full logic in our guide to Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Decision, and it is exactly the kind of arbitrage we build with families in our college counselling for international students.

The strategic consequence: you effectively hold one restrictive or binding card. Where you play it, and whether you play it at all, should follow from your profile, your need for financial aid and the honest strength of your file today, not from a ranking.

The test calendar hiding behind the deadline

The SAT of Saturday 7 November is the hidden deadline inside the deadline. Registration closes on 23 October, with late registration until 27 October at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. If you still need a score, or a better one, that booking window closes before your applications do.

Can a 7 November score still count for a 1 November application? Often, yes. MIT requires the SAT or ACT and accepts tests taken through 30 November for Early Action. Harvard, which also requires testing, states that the November test series can still be considered for Restrictive Early Action. Sending a strong October or November score after submitting is routine; universities match it to your file. Our full SAT and ACT 2026-2027 calendar lays out every remaining date.

Applying for financial aid at MIT in Early Action? The aid documents are due by 30 November, a deadline families discover late every year.

Your week-by-week plan from 14 October

This week, 14 to 18 October: lock your list. Decide which early plan, if any, you are playing, and confirm it with your counsellor. If the honest answer is that your essays are far from ready, Regular Decision in January is a better application than a rushed 1 November file.

By Friday 23 October: register for the 7 November SAT if you need it. Late registration buys you until 27 October at a premium, but seats in European test centres go first.

19 to 25 October: final drafts of the personal essay and supplements, recommenders confirmed and gently reminded, activities list rewritten for impact rather than completeness.

26 to 31 October: full review of the Common App, transcripts and predicted grades checked, then submit one or two days early. Every year, servers slow to a crawl on the evening of 1 November.

After 1 November: keep writing. Regular Decision essays for January are the best insurance policy, and mid-December decisions arrive faster than you think.

Play the early round with people who know it

Early rounds reward preparation and punish improvisation, especially for international students juggling UCAS, the Common App and school exams at once. Since 2018, we have guided 1,000+ students through exactly this kind of multi-country autumn, including 7 admitted to Columbia. Figures taken from our admissions database, cohorts 2019 to 2025; these are minimums, as the 2017-2018 and 2025-2026 cohorts are not yet consolidated. Our families have left 160+ Google reviews, and our bachelor admissions coaching and premium admissions coaching exist precisely for the next 18 days.

If you want a clear verdict on your early strategy before 1 November, book a strategy call with our team this week.
