LBS Score Requirements 2026: GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE

LBS Score Requirements 2026

Standardized test scores are a critical part of your application to London Business School. Although LBS does not publish strict minimum scores, understanding the competitive ranges for the GMAT, GRE, TOEFL and IELTS will help you set realistic targets and assess how competitive you are.

GMAT Benchmarks by Program

GMAT Score Requirements for the MBA

Score RangePercentileCompetitivenessNotes
700+88-99Highly CompetitiveSignificantly strengthens your profile; average score for admitted candidates
680-69982-88CompetitiveGood chance of consideration; a solid foundation
650-67973-82Moderately CompetitiveMinimum threshold; the other parts of your application must be strong
620-64960-73WeakDifficult without an exceptional background
Below 620Below 60Very WeakSignificant disadvantage; consider a retake

LBS MBA GMAT Facts:
• Average GMAT: 710
• Typical Range: 600–780
• Median Score: ~710
• 25th Percentile: ~650
• 75th Percentile: ~750

The average GMAT score of 710 reflects the caliber of admitted students. However, LBS admits students across the full score range. A score below 700 will not rule you out if the other parts of your application (work experience, essays, recommendations) are exceptionally strong. Conversely, a high GMAT score does not guarantee admission if the rest of your profile is weak.

GMAT Score Requirements for the Master in Management

Score RangePercentileCompetitivenessNotes
690+85-99Highly CompetitiveAverage for admitted candidates; a stronger profile
670-68978-85CompetitiveWell positioned for the MiM program
640-66967-78Moderately CompetitiveAcceptable for consideration; other strengths matter
610-63955-67WeakBelow the typical range; a strong background can help
Below 610Below 55Very WeakSignificant disadvantage for this program

LBS MiM GMAT Facts:
• Average GMAT: 690+
• Typical Range: 600–770
• Competitive Range: 670+
• The program is aimed at recent graduates with limited experience

The Master in Management attracts recent graduates moving into management roles. GMAT scores are slightly lower on average than for the MBA, but strong scores still set your application apart in this competitive program.

The GRE as an Alternative to the GMAT

GRE Score RangeGMAT EquivalentMBA CompetitivenessMiM Competitiveness
325-340710-790Highly CompetitiveHighly Competitive
315-324650-709CompetitiveCompetitive
305-314600-649Moderately CompetitiveModerately Competitive
295-304550-599WeakWeak
Below 295Below 550Very WeakVery Weak

LBS fully accepts the GRE as an alternative to the GMAT. The school converts GRE scores into equivalent GMAT scores for evaluation purposes. If you perform better on the GRE format or have already taken the GRE, submitting GRE scores is perfectly acceptable and will not put your application at a disadvantage. Focus on achieving the highest possible score on whichever test you choose.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Non-native English speakers must demonstrate their English proficiency to LBS through standardized tests. These requirements apply to candidates whose undergraduate education was not conducted in English.

TOEFL Score Requirements

TOEFL ScoreSection Breakdown (Est.)CompetitivenessNotes
120 (Maximum)30/30 in all sectionsExceptionalDemonstrated native-level English proficiency
110-11927-29 per sectionExcellentWell above the requirement; strong English foundation
105-10926-27 per sectionMeets requirementMinimum acceptable for LBS; meets the standard
100-10424-25 per sectionBelow requirementNot accepted; consider a retake or the IELTS
Below 100Below 24 per sectionUnacceptableDoes not meet the requirements; retake required

LBS TOEFL requirements:
• Minimum required: 105
• Recommended: 110+
• No section-specific minimums (all sections weighted equally)
• Test format: TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT)

A TOEFL score of 105 is the minimum acceptable threshold for the LBS MBA and most of the school’s other programs. Although you could technically meet the requirement with 105, a score of 110+ strengthens your application and shows that you can succeed in a program taught in English. The TOEFL iBT is scored on a 0-120 scale, and most applicants score above 100.

IELTS Score Requirements

IELTS bandScore rangeCompetitivenessNotes
8.0-9.0Very highExceptionalNear-native proficiency; well above the requirement
7.5-7.9HighMeets/exceeds requirementMinimum requirement; demonstrates strong English
7.0-7.4GoodBelow requirementNot accepted; consider a retake or the TOEFL
6.5-6.9SatisfactoryBelow requirementDoes not meet the LBS standard
Below 6.5Acceptable to borderlineUnacceptableDoes not meet the requirements; retake required

LBS IELTS requirements:
• Minimum required: 7.5
• Recommended: 8.0+
• Test format: IELTS Academic (not General Training)
• You must score 7.5 or higher overall (no band below 7.0)

For the IELTS, the minimum requirement is an overall band score of 7.5. LBS accepts IELTS Academic, not General Training. The IELTS is scored on a 1.0-9.0 scale in 0.5-point increments. Unlike with the TOEFL, some programs may set minimum IELTS scores for individual sections (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking), although LBS focuses on the overall band score.

TOEFL vs. IELTS: Which Should You Take?

Choose the TOEFL if:
• You prefer computer-based tests
• You perform better on multiple-choice questions
• You want to take the test several times to improve your score
• You prefer a Listening section with American English accents

Choose the IELTS if:
• You prefer speaking with a human examiner
• You perform better when your writing is assessed through essays
• You are familiar with British English pronunciation
• You want a more conversational Speaking section

LBS accepts both tests equally, so choose the format in which you expect to score highest. Many applicants find the IELTS Speaking section more comfortable because it is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner, while others prefer the TOEFL’s computer-based format.

GMAT Score Guidance for the Master in Finance

The Master in Finance program attracts applicants with strong quantitative backgrounds. Although its GMAT benchmarks are less widely published than those of the MBA and MiM, competitive applicants typically score 680+. Quantitative performance (GMAT Quant section: 45+) is especially important for this program, as it shows you can handle rigorous finance coursework.

Score Improvement Strategy

How Many Times Should You Take the GMAT?

Most successful applicants take the GMAT once or twice. Taking the test multiple times can signal to admissions committees that you struggle with standardized tests, although all schools, including LBS, will use your highest score. Our recommendations:

Strategy by initial score:
• 700+: Apply right away; retake only if you believe you can score significantly higher
• 680-699: Consider a retake if you have time and can identify clear areas for improvement
• 650-679: A retake is advisable to make you more competitive
• Below 650: Several retakes may be needed; focus on dedicated preparation

Start preparing for the GMAT 3-4 months before your target application round. If your first attempt falls short of your target score, spend 4-6 weeks working on your weak areas before retaking. You can retake the GMAT every 16 days, but rushing into retakes without targeted preparation rarely leads to meaningful improvement.

GMAT Preparation Resources

English Proficiency Preparation Tips

If you are a non-native speaker preparing for the TOEFL or IELTS:

TOEFL preparation:
• Focus on academic English and business vocabulary
• Practice integrated writing tasks (combining reading, listening and writing)
• Use only official ETS practice materials for accuracy
• Aim for balanced scores across all sections
• Practice writing essays under timed conditions

IELTS preparation:
• Practice with British English materials and accents
• Focus on essay-writing skills for the Writing module
• Prepare for conversational English in the Speaking section
• Use the official Cambridge IELTS materials
• Get familiar with the Speaking format (a one-to-one interview)

Interpreting Your Scores

Remember that a standardized test score is only one part of your application. LBS assesses applications holistically. Strong scores combined with:

• A solid academic background (GPA 3.0+)
• Meaningful work experience with clear progression
• Compelling essays that show your motivation and fit
• Strong letters of recommendation
• Evidence of leadership and impact

…make for a winning application. Conversely, high test scores cannot make up for weak work experience or unconvincing essays. Focus on building strength across every part of your application.
