UCL sits in a strange spot in the 2027 rankings landscape: 8th in the world in the QS rankings, back in the THE top 20, yet only 13th in the main UK domestic league tables. For an international applicant, that gap is not statistical noise. It tells you exactly what UCL rewards in an application, and why this top 10 world university remains one of the most readable targets for a strong school leaver. Here is what the published numbers actually say, and how to build a 2027 entry application around them.

What UCL’s 2027 Rankings Actually Say

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, UCL is joint 8th in the world, up one place: its 15th consecutive year in the global top 10. It also ranks 3rd worldwide for sustainability and 2nd for international research networks. The THE World University Rankings 2027, published on 30 September, place UCL joint 17th, up 5 places and back in the top 20 for the first time since the 2022 edition. U.S. News ranks it 9th globally, 3rd in Europe behind Oxford and Cambridge.

Domestic league tables tell a different story: 13th in the Guardian University Guide 2027 and 13th in the Complete University Guide 2027. There is no mystery here. Global rankings weigh research output and academic reputation, while UK guides measure student experience and satisfaction, criteria where very large urban universities are structurally at a disadvantage against St Andrews or Bath. Our breakdown of the THE 2027 rankings covers how to read these gaps.

By subject, UCL is world number 1 in Education (Institute of Education) and in Architecture (The Bartlett) in the QS 2026 subject rankings, with 12 fields in the global top 10. If your project touches these disciplines, UCL is not one option among many: it is the global reference.

Entry Requirements: A Published, Readable Grid

UCL publishes official equivalences for international qualifications, which makes it unusually transparent. For the French Baccalaureat, the current grid (published for 2026 entry, to be confirmed programme by programme for 2027) runs from 13/20 overall for ABB courses to 16.5/20 for A*A*A courses, with 15/20 for AAA. Subject requirements follow the same logic: 16/20 in the relevant subject for an A*, 15/20 for an A, 13/20 for a B. Many courses have subject-specific requirements, so check that your subject choices match before locking your list. UCL says it plainly: admission is competitive and meeting the minimum guarantees nothing. That is where the personal statement and the coherence of your academic story do the work, exactly what we build in our UCAS counseling.

English Requirements: Five Levels, Two Traps

UCL sorts its courses into five English levels, from IELTS 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in each component) at Level 1 up to IELTS 8.0 across the board at Level 5. Two traps to avoid: IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted, and for TOEFL iBT, tests taken from 21 January 2026 are scored on the new scale (4.5 to 5.5 overall depending on the level), with MyBestScore not accepted either. Some national school qualifications can replace a test, including the French Baccalaureat with 13/20 in English where the subject coefficient is above 1: check the requirement level of your specific programme.

The Calendar: 13 January 2027, and 31 December for Law

UCL has no 15 October courses: your UCAS application must arrive by 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time, the UCAS deadline for all undergraduate courses outside the 15 October group. That is three months more than Oxbridge, but a file that convinces a world top 10 university is not written in December. Use the autumn to settle your course choice, confirm your subject fit against the published requirements, and put your personal statement through several serious drafts rather than one rushed one.

Law deserves its own warning: for UCL’s LLB, as for King’s and LSE, the LNAT must be sat by 31 December 2026, not late January as for most other universities. Test centre slots thin out over the Christmas break, so book now. Our law admissions page covers the degree routes, and our bachelor admission guide maps the full UK calendar.

What We See With Our Students

UCL is, by a wide margin, the university where our students receive the most offers in the UK: 100 students admitted to UCL. Figures from our admissions database, classes of 2019 to 2025. These are minimums: the 2017-2018 and 2025-2026 cohorts are not yet consolidated. Our reading: UCL rewards solid, coherent academic profiles over spectacular but scattered ones. In a balanced UCAS list, it often plays the role of the ambitious yet reachable target between Oxbridge and the safer picks. Programme details are on our UCL page.
