LSE with the French Baccalauréat: grade requirements, what to know (2026)

The London School of Economics (LSE) is one of the few UK universities that spells out, in black and white, what it expects from a student holding the French Baccalauréat. No vague “excellent results” wording: a published conversion grid to A-levels, a minimum mark in Spécialité Maths, a compulsory admissions test for Economics and a deadline that does not move. Here is what to aim for if you plan to start in September 2027, with every figure checked on LSE’s official pages on 6 September 2026.

What Baccalauréat grades does LSE ask for?

LSE converts the French Baccalauréat into A-level equivalents using a public grid. For 2027 entry it reads as follows:

• A*AA or AAA (the standard offer for most LSE degrees) = Mention Très Bien, i.e. 16 overall;
• AAB (a handful of less competitive programmes) = Mention Bien, i.e. 15 overall;
• A* in Mathematics = 16 in the Spécialité Maths final examination (the option taken in Première and Terminale);
• A in Mathematics = 15 in the Spécialité Maths final examination;
• Further Mathematics = the Maths Expertes option in Terminale, accepted as an equivalent.

For the Baccalauréat Français International (BFI) the bar is slightly lower: Mention Très Bien at 15 for A*AA or AAA, Mention Bien at 14 for AAB. The maths thresholds stay the same (16 and 15).

Two details matter. First, LSE works with predicted grades at the UCAS stage and then with the grades actually achieved: a Terminale transcript at 15.5 with a clear upward trend will not be read the same way as a 15.5 that is slipping. Second, LSE itself writes that meeting the requirements “does not guarantee an offer”: the grid is an entry ticket, not a passport.

Economics at LSE: 16 in maths and a compulsory test

The BSc Economics is the flagship programme and the most contested. Its standard offer for 2027 is A*AA with an A* in Mathematics, which for a French applicant means Mention Très Bien plus 16 in the Spécialité Maths exam. LSE received 2,885 applications for 217 places on this programme, a 13:1 ratio (2025 figures published on the programme page).

The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is mandatory for Economics applicants. The official UAT-UK calendar for the 2027 cycle is:

• October sitting: booking closes on 28 September 2026 at 6pm UK time, test window 12 to 16 October 2026, results on 16 November 2026;
• January sitting: booking closes on 21 December 2026, test window 4 to 8 January 2027, results on 8 February 2027;
• the test costs £133 outside the UK and Ireland, and you can sit it only once per cycle.

On the money side, Overseas tuition for the BSc Economics is £41,900 per year for 2027-28, an amount LSE commits to hold for each subsequent year of the degree. Term starts on 27 September 2027.

Do you need IELTS to apply to LSE?

Not when you apply. LSE states that no proof of English proficiency is required until you receive an offer. If the offer is conditional on a test, the result must be submitted before the July deadline. The thresholds are among the highest in the UK:

• IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each of the four components, in one sitting;
• TOEFL iBT: 100 overall (27 Writing, 25 Reading, 24 Listening, 24 Speaking) on the old scale, or 5.5 overall with at least 5 in each section on the new scale used since January 2026;
• Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: 185 overall and in every component;
• students on the BFI bilingual route in English who complete the LVA module in English are exempt from any test.

The real trap is “7.0 in each component”: many French students reach 7.5 in Listening and Reading and stall at 6.5 in Writing. LSE does not combine best scores from several sittings. That is why we recommend a first mock test as early as Première: see our IELTS preparation guide.

What is the LSE application deadline for 2027?

LSE is not Oxford or Cambridge: the 15 October deadline does not apply. Applications go through UCAS and must arrive by 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time, the “equal consideration” deadline. Applications received after that date can still be sent, but LSE no longer guarantees they will be considered on the same footing.

In practice, the timeline for a Terminale student targeting Economics looks like this: book the TMUA before 28 September, sit it in mid-October, finalise the personal statement and the referee’s letter in November, submit the UCAS form in December to keep a safety margin, then prepare IELTS for a spring sitting. How many French students get into LSE each year?

LSE reports that it welcomed 126 French undergraduate students in 2025. That is a significant number for a university of its size, and it confirms that the French Baccalauréat is a profile the admissions team knows well. LSE is also ranked first in the UK by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide in both 2025 and 2026, and fifth in the world for social sciences and management in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

What those numbers do not say: the file is not decided on grades alone. LSE reads your subject combination (maths remains essential for Economics, Finance, Statistics and applied mathematics degrees), your personal statement, your teacher’s reference and your school context. A student with 16 overall, Spécialité Maths and a clear project in the social sciences has a real shot.
