University College Maastricht, Maastricht University’s liberal arts honours college

University College Maastricht
University College Maastricht (UCM) is the honours college in liberal arts and sciences of Maastricht University. Founded in 2002, it offers a three-year, English-taught Bachelor and is best known for its distinctive teaching method: Problem-Based Learning, in which students learn through small tutorial groups working on real problems rather than traditional lectures.
UCM gives students unusual freedom to design their own curriculum, choosing from courses across sciences, social sciences and humanities, in one of the most international universities in the Netherlands.

The programme
UCM offers a three-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Liberal Arts and Sciences, taught in English. Students build a highly individual programme — concentrating in sciences, social sciences or humanities, or combining them — supported by Problem-Based Learning in small groups of around a dozen students.
This approach develops independence, teamwork and analytical skills, and prepares graduates for a wide range of Master’s programmes and careers.
How do I apply?
What the application includes
UCM selects through its own procedure. Applications typically include academic transcripts and predicted grades, a motivation letter, references, proof of English, and often an interview. Evidence of self-direction and broad academic interests helps.
Selection criteria
UCM looks for self-motivated, independent students who will thrive in a Problem-Based Learning environment where they take charge of their own study. Motivation, maturity and academic ability all weigh in selection.
Tuition fees and living costs
As selective honours programmes, Dutch university colleges charge higher tuition than standard Dutch bachelor’s degrees, and non-EU/EEA students pay more than EU students; many programmes are residential, so factor in on-campus accommodation. The Netherlands remains more affordable than the UK or US overall. Confirm current tuition, the EU vs non-EU rate and living costs on the official website before applying.
Why students choose University College Maastricht
Students choose UCM for its Problem-Based Learning, the freedom to design their own degree, and Maastricht’s exceptionally international environment. It suits independent learners who want flexibility and active, discussion-based teaching rather than large lectures.
Campus, location and student life
UCM is based in the centre of Maastricht, a charming, compact city in the far south of the Netherlands, on the border with Belgium and Germany. The university is one of the most international in Europe, and the city is safe, walkable and student-friendly, with easy train access to Brussels, Cologne and beyond. English is the working language of the college.
When should I start preparing?
Dutch university colleges select on more than grades, so start 12 to 18 months ahead. That gives time to sit an English test if needed, write a strong motivation letter, gather references and prepare for an interview. Early preparation also lets you build the well-rounded profile these colleges look for — exactly the support Your Dream School provides.
