U.S. News Best Colleges 2027: MIT Overtakes Princeton, What It Changes for Your Application

The U.S. News Best Colleges 2027 rankings came out on 22 September 2026, and they open with a genuine headline: MIT is now the number one national university in the United States, ending Princeton’s run of fifteen consecutive years at the top. With the 1 November early deadlines just five weeks away, this new table will inevitably shape family conversations this autumn. Here is what actually changed, why the movements are so large this year, and what it should (and should not) change in your application strategy.

Key facts and figures

The new top 10 national universities

The 2027 table reads as follows: MIT first, Princeton second, Harvard third, Yale fourth, then Caltech and Stanford tied in fifth place. The University of Pennsylvania is seventh, Duke eighth, and three universities share ninth place: Johns Hopkins, Northwestern and the University of Chicago.

Just below, Columbia and Dartmouth are tied at 12th, Carnegie Mellon and Cornell at 14th, and Brown, Rice, Vanderbilt and Washington University in St. Louis share 16th place. California’s flagship publics slipped: Berkeley fell from 15th to 20th, a rank it now shares with UCLA and Notre Dame.

The symbolism matters: Princeton had held first place for fifteen editions in a row. MIT, already ranked number one for undergraduate engineering, computer science and economics, is now the overall reference point.

Why the rankings moved so much this year

The dramatic swings in this edition (Caltech up six places, Carnegie Mellon up six, Berkeley down five) have less to do with what happened on campus than with two methodology changes.

First, U.S. News has taken on updates to the Carnegie Classification framework when sorting institutions into categories. Around 20 per cent of previously ranked schools moved category, and U.S. News states that their 2027 rank cannot be compared directly with earlier editions because they are now measured against a different peer group. Second, the graduate indebtedness indicator has been dropped in favour of a new Earnings by Major metric, which measures graduates’ earnings four years after completing their degree using U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard data (source: U.S. News press release of 22 September 2026, checked on 23 September 2026).

In other words, when a university gains or loses five places without a single professor or programme changing, the rules of the game changed, not the quality of the education. That is the first thing to keep in mind before reshuffling your school list.

What this means for your application

For an international student targeting fall 2027 entry, our reading is straightforward.

Do not reorder your list on the strength of an overall rank. A general ranking aggregates up to 17 indicators, many of which (social mobility, retention rates, faculty resources) have little to do with your situation as an international applicant. What matters for you is the strength of the department you are targeting, outcomes in your intended field, the real cost after financial aid, and your realistic chances of admission. Berkeley at 20th remains a world reference in many disciplines, and a top 5 overall rank does not make every programme at that university the best fit for you.

The rule has not changed: aim high, but secure realistic options you would be happy to attend.

The real calendar: deadlines are what count now

While the press debates the table, the dates have not moved. Most of the most selective American universities close their early round on 1 November 2026: Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford (restrictive early action), MIT (early action), and Penn, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Northwestern in early decision, with the University of Chicago slightly later on 2 November. Harvard states the deadline as 11:59pm in your own local time and releases its answers by mid December, while MIT also decides in mid December and opens Regular Action until 4 January (sources: college.harvard.edu and mitadmissions.org, read 17 October 2026). On the testing side, two SAT windows remain this autumn: 7 November 2026, whose registration closes on 23 October with changes and late registration until 27 October, and 5 December 2026, registration closing 20 November and late registration 24 November. The point families miss is what comes next: the College Board table shows no weekend sitting between 5 December 2026 and 6 March 2027, whose own registration closes on 19 February 2027. In other words, 5 December is the last score you can add to a Regular Decision file in January, and after it the calendar goes quiet for three months (source: satsuite.collegeboard.org, dates and deadlines page, read 17 October 2026).

For the early round the policies are explicit. Harvard asks Restrictive Early Action candidates for their results by the end of October but confirms the November series still reaches it in time, and MIT requires the SAT or ACT to be taken before 30 November for Early Action, and before 31 December for Regular Action (sources: college.harvard.edu and mitadmissions.org, read 17 October 2026).
