Overview: the F-1 timeline

The F-1 visa is issued for the length of your program plus a 60-day grace period. It allows you to study full-time on a US campus and to work 20 hours a week on campus during your studies.

Step 1: Receive your I-20 form from the university (immediately after admission)

Once you’re admitted, the American university sends you a physical I-20 form (a signed original on paper): this is your key SEVIS document, proving your admission and your ability to cover the costs. Check that all the information is correct (full name exactly as on your passport, exact program, exact dates). Any error on the I-20 must be corrected before the interview: the university will send you a new I-20 (~3-5 days).

Step 2: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee ($350) before your visa interview

The SEVIS I-901 fee is $350 for F-1 visas. Pay it online at fmjfee.com. Keep the receipt: you’ll need to show it on the day of your interview. Timing: payment is instant, but it takes 3 business days to show up in the consular systems.

Step 3: Complete the DS-160 form online

The DS-160 is the nonimmigrant visa application form. Allow 2-3 hours to fill it in. It asks for your full education history, your travel over the last 5 years, any family contacts in the US, and a number of security questions. Print the DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode: it’s the main document you’ll be asked for at the interview.

Step 4: Pay the MRV visa fee ($185) and book your appointment

MRV (Machine-Readable Visa) fee: $185. Pay through the consular system at ais.usvisa-info.com/fr-fr/niv. Once you’ve paid, you can access the interview calendar. Current wait times (2026): 2-4 weeks in Paris for a standard F-1 visa. At certain times of year, a “Visa Walk-In” option (no appointment needed) may be available for student applicants.

Step 5: The visa interview at the consulate (Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg)

On the day of your interview, bring:

  • Passport (valid for 6 months beyond the end of your program)
  • Printed DS-160 confirmation page
  • SEVIS I-901 payment receipt
  • MRV payment receipt
  • Original I-20 signed by the university
  • University admission letter
  • Transcripts and diplomas
  • Proof of funds (bank statements from the last 3 months showing you can cover 1 year of tuition and living expenses: typically $50-90K in visible funds, or a notarized affidavit of support from your parents)
  • Passport photo meeting US requirements (5 x 5 cm)

The interview lasts 3-5 minutes. The consular officer will ask you 4-6 questions: Why this university? Why this program? How are you funding your studies? What are your plans after graduation? The aim is to demonstrate your nonimmigrant intent: you must show that you intend to return home after your studies.

Step 6: Collect your visa (1-2 weeks)

Once your visa is approved, your passport is kept for 5-10 business days while the visa is printed. You then collect it from DHL or a consular agency. Check that all the information on the visa is correct before you leave.

Common mistakes that cost you time

  • A photo that doesn’t meet US requirements: have it taken at an approved shop and specify “US visa”
  • Insufficient proof of funds: it must cover at least 1 year of study, not just 1 semester
  • Booking your flight before approval: risky, so wait until you have your visa
  • An I-20 not signed by the university, or with a misspelled name
  • Underestimating wait times: start the visa process as soon as you have your I-20, not in July for a late-August start

FAQ: the F-1 visa

When should I book my visa interview?

As soon as you receive your I-20 and have paid the SEVIS and MRV fees. For a September start, ideally book in May or June. The wait is typically 2–4 weeks in Paris, sometimes longer at the summer peak.

Can I work in the US on an F-1 visa?

Yes, but with limits: up to 20 hours a week on campus during your studies. Off-campus work is not allowed in your first year. After 9 months in your programme, you can apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training) to work for 12 months after graduation (36 months for STEM).

If my visa is refused, can I reapply?

Yes. F-1 visa refusals are rare (approval rate of 95%+). If you are refused, the consular officer will tell you why (often insufficient proof of non-immigrant intent or insufficient funds). You can reapply immediately with a corrected application.

Do I need health insurance for an F-1 visa?

Not to get the visa, but you do need it to enter the US. Most American universities require international health insurance (often a mandatory part of their fees, around $2,000–4,000 a year). Check your university’s requirements.

Can I enter the US before my programme starts?

Yes, up to 30 days before the start date shown on your I-20. No earlier: the officer at the airport can deny you entry and send you back.
