The Netherlands has quietly become Europe’s leading destination for English-taught higher education. With over 2,100 Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes delivered entirely in English, a globally respected higher education system, and an internationally-minded student culture, it’s one of the smartest choices for 2026.

Top Dutch Universities

  • University of Amsterdam (UvA) — Strong social sciences, economics, humanities
  • Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) — Top 15 globally for engineering
  • Leiden University — Netherlands’ oldest, law and international relations
  • Erasmus University Rotterdam — Top-ranked economics and business
  • Maastricht University — Pioneer of Problem-Based Learning, highly international
  • Utrecht University — Comprehensive research university, strong sciences

Tuition Fees

For non-EEA international students: €8,000–20,000/year depending on programme and university. EU students pay the statutory rate of approximately €2,300/year. Technical and medical programmes are at the higher end.

Admission Requirements

Dutch universities use Numerus Fixus (fixed quotas) for popular programmes like Medicine and Psychology. For most programmes: secondary school diploma equivalent to Dutch VWO, IELTS 6.0–7.0 or TOEFL 80–100 depending on the university, and some programmes require motivation letters or portfolios.

Cost of Living

Budget €900–1,200/month. Amsterdam is most expensive; cities like Groningen, Nijmegen and Tilburg are significantly cheaper. Dutch student housing is in high demand — apply as early as possible.

Student Visa (MVV)

Non-EEA students need an MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) entry visa. The university typically handles the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) application on your behalf. You need proof of admission, financial means (€870/month), health insurance and a clean criminal record.

Post-Study Options

The Orientation Year visa (Zoekjaar) gives you 12 months after graduation to find work in the Netherlands. With a Dutch degree and English skills, employment in Amsterdam’s international business scene is highly accessible.
