Switzerland punches far above its weight academically. With two universities in the global top 15 (ETH Zurich and EPFL), world-leading research institutes, and one of the highest graduate salary markets in Europe, Switzerland is an exceptional destination for ambitious international students in 2026.

Top Swiss Universities

  • ETH Zurich — Consistently top 10 globally, exceptional for STEM
  • EPFL (Lausanne) — Among world’s top engineering schools, strong francophone community
  • University of Geneva — International law, global health, social sciences
  • University of Zurich — Large comprehensive research university
  • IMD Lausanne — One of world’s top business schools (MBA/Executive)
  • HSG St. Gallen — Top business school in continental Europe

Tuition Fees

Swiss public universities charge between CHF 1,000–3,500/year for international students — far lower than UK or US equivalents. Private institutions (IMD, business schools) are significantly more expensive. ETH Zurich and EPFL charge approximately CHF 730/semester for all students regardless of nationality.

Language of Instruction

Switzerland has 4 official languages: German (ETH Zurich, University of Zurich, Bern), French (EPFL, University of Geneva, Lausanne), Italian (USI Lugano), and Romansh. Many Master’s programmes are in English. EPFL and the University of Geneva are particularly accessible for francophones.

Cost of Living

Switzerland is expensive: budget CHF 1,800–2,500/month (≈ €1,900–2,600). Zurich and Geneva are among the world’s most expensive cities. Student housing and subsidised canteens significantly reduce costs. Many students work part-time (permitted up to 15 hours/week on a student visa).

Student Visa for Switzerland

EU/EEA nationals: register at the local municipality upon arrival. Non-EU: apply for a student residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung/permis de séjour). Requirements: university acceptance, proof of financial resources (CHF 21,000/year), health insurance, and accommodation proof.

Career Prospects

Switzerland has one of the world’s highest average salaries. ETH and EPFL graduates are recruited by Google, BCG, Goldman Sachs and Switzerland’s thriving pharma/finance/tech sectors. The post-study job search visa allows 6 months to find employment after graduation.
