Studying in Israel: Universities, Admissions and the Complete 2026 Guide

Why study in Israel?

Israel has become a sought-after destination for international students thanks to its world-class universities, its unique innovation ecosystem (the “Startup Nation”) and its English-taught programs. The country is home to several institutions ranked in the global top 200, including the Technion, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University.

The best universities in Israel

Israeli universities are especially well regarded in technology, computer science, the sciences and entrepreneurship. These are the most prestigious institutions:

Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (Haifa)

Often compared to MIT, the Technion is one of the best engineering schools in the world. Regularly ranked in the global top 100, it trains tomorrow’s leaders in technological innovation. English-taught programs are available at bachelor’s and master’s level.

Tel Aviv University

Israel’s largest university, located in the heart of the country’s economic hub. Tel Aviv University excels in the social sciences, law, business and technology. Its international program offers full degree courses taught in English.

Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Founded in 1918, it is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Israel. Ranked in the global top 150, it is particularly renowned for the humanities, medicine and agriculture.

Reichman University (IDC Herzliya)

Israel’s most international private university, with the largest number of international students. Specializing in business, communications, law and government, it offers all of its programs in English.

Admission requirements

Requirements vary from one university to another, but you will generally need a strong academic record (a high school diploma with good grades), a TOEFL or IELTS score for English-taught programs, a personal statement and, in some cases, an interview. Deadlines usually fall between January and May for an October start.

Cost of living and tuition fees

Tuition fees in Israel are moderate compared with UK and US universities: expect to pay between €3,000 and €15,000 a year, depending on the program and the university. The cost of living in Tel Aviv is similar to that of Paris, while Jerusalem and Haifa are more affordable. Many scholarships are available to international students.
