The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, published on 18 September 2026, named the London School of Economics its Russell Group University of the Year. Second overall behind St Andrews, after two consecutive years at number one, LSE also remains the top ranked university in London. And it is not an isolated result: third in the Guardian 2027 and in the Complete University Guide 2027, and 47th worldwide in the THE 2027 ranking, LSE has collected podium finishes all autumn. If you are preparing a UCAS application, the real question is not whether LSE deserves its reputation. It is what this ranking season changes for your file: a deeper applicant pool, a written application that has to convince on its own, and two dates to lock in now.
Three national podiums and a return to the world top 50
LSE’s 2027 results are strikingly consistent. The Times Good University Guide ranks it 2nd in the UK and first in London, with six subjects ranked number one in the country: economics, anthropology, philosophy, politics and international relations, psychology, and social policy. The Guardian University Guide 2027 places it 3rd, first in London for the seventh year running, with law and international relations leading the UK. The Complete University Guide 2027 confirms the picture: 3rd nationally, London’s top university for the fifteenth consecutive year.
Internationally, the THE World University Rankings 2027, published at the end of September, moved LSE up five places to 47th: a return to the world top 50 that ends five years of decline. We covered both stories in our analyses of the THE World University Rankings 2027 and the Times Good University Guide 2027. The takeaway is simple: when a university climbs in three rankings in the same season, application numbers almost always follow. The 2027 cycle will be more competitive than the last.
No interviews at LSE: your file is the interview
LSE has a feature many families discover too late: it interviews no one. Its admissions page is explicit: “We do not interview applicants for any of our programmes at LSE”. Decisions are made by Academic Selectors on the UCAS file alone: grades, personal statement and reference. With the exception of the LNAT for the LLB in Law, there is no admissions test either, unlike Oxford, Cambridge or Imperial.
That sounds like good news: no interview to rehearse, no test to book for most courses. In practice, it shifts all the pressure onto the written file. You will never get the chance to rescue an average personal statement or a poorly aligned subject profile in an interview. At LSE, the application you submit in January is your only conversation with the selectors. Every line counts, and the coherence between your subjects, your reading and the course you choose weighs more than anywhere else.
French Baccalaureat: the benchmarks LSE publishes
LSE publishes an official conversion grid for the French Baccalaureat. For courses asking A*AA or AAA, it expects a Mention Tres Bien with 16 overall; for AAB courses, a Mention Bien with 15. In mathematics, an A* corresponds to 16 in the final specialite exam and an A to 15, and the Maths Expertes option is accepted as the equivalent of Further Mathematics. BFI students benefit from a lighter scale: Tres Bien with 15 for A*AA or AAA, Bien with 14 for AAB. Proof of English is not required at the application stage, and BFI students from English speaking bilingual sections are exempt altogether. In 2025, LSE counted 126 French undergraduates: a narrow path, but a well marked one. We break these thresholds down course by course in our guide to LSE with the French Baccalaureat, and our full LSE application guide covers the rest of the file.
The calendar: 13 January 2027, and 31 December for Law
The UCAS deadline for full and equal consideration is 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time, and LSE warns that places are rarely left after that date. The trap of the 2027 cycle concerns law applicants: for LSE’s LLB, the LNAT must be sat on or before 31 December 2026, almost a month before the 25 January deadline most other universities apply. A candidate who waits until January to deal with it is out of the race before even submitting. If law is on your list, book your test slot now: centres fill up fast in December.
The rest of the countdown follows: personal statement finalised in November, reference requested before the Christmas break, and the complete application submitted in early January rather than on deadline day.
Well supported through submission
