This guide explains the main steps in a UCAS undergraduate application, from building your shortlist to replying to offers. Updated September 2026: the timetable below is for 2027 entry. Applicants still completing the 2026 cycle should use the separate dates on the official UCAS calendar.
1. Build a course shortlist
Start with the subject you want to study. Compare course modules, assessment, entry requirements and location, then check tuition fees and living costs for your circumstances. Keep a simple checklist for each course, including any admissions test, interview or portfolio requirement. A university ranking alone cannot tell you whether a course suits your interests.
2. Prepare your application and reference
Register in the UCAS Hub and select your intended entry year. You can include up to five choices. Enter your qualifications accurately, including results you already hold and those still pending; use the original qualification names rather than inventing UK equivalents. Arrange your academic reference early. If you apply through a school, ask about its internal deadline. Follow the official UCAS application instructions for the individual sections and supporting documents.
3. Write the three personal statement responses
From 2026 entry onwards, the personal statement uses three questions covering your motivation, preparation through your studies, and preparation outside formal education. There is a shared limit of 4,000 characters including spaces, with at least 350 characters for each answer. Use specific examples and explain what you learned from them. Avoid repeating the same evidence across the three responses. Read UCAS’s guidance on the personal statement format before drafting.
4. Use the correct deadline for 2027 entry
- 1 September 2026: completed applications can be submitted.
- 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time: equal consideration deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.
- 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time: equal consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses.
Check the deadline for every course. Admissions tests have separate booking dates. You can add choices with a later deadline after submitting earlier choices, within the overall limit of five. Check the official UCAS calendar for exceptions, late applications and Clearing. Leave time for your referee and school to complete their part.
5. Check, submit and track your application
Before submission, check your contact details, qualification entries, course choices and reference. For 2027 entry, the application fee is £34.50 for up to five choices; check UCAS guidance for any applicable waiver. After submission, monitor your Hub and email for decisions or requests for information.
6. Understand and reply to your offers
A conditional offer sets requirements you must meet, such as examination results. An unconditional offer means the academic requirements for the offer have been met, although other checks or arrangements may remain. Read each offer carefully and use your individual reply deadline. Your firm choice is your first choice; an insurance choice may be available when you accept a conditional offer. Consult UCAS’s explanations of offer types and how to reply before making a decision.
