On 18 September, the Times and Sunday Times named Imperial College London University of the Year 2027. A few months earlier, the QS 2027 ranking had confirmed Imperial as 2nd in the world, first in the UK and in Europe. If you are an international student aiming for London, these titles are not just another line on a Wikipedia page: they signal even tougher competition for 2027 entry, with two very different deadlines depending on your course. Medicine applicants have eleven days left. Everyone else has until 13 January, and still has a January test window to play. Here is what you need to know, checked today on Imperial’s official pages.

A remarkable rankings season

The 2027 sweep is rare. In the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, Imperial is 3rd in the UK, University of the Year 2027, University of the Year for Graduate Employment and 1st for research quality. The Guardian 2027 guide places it 5th nationally, 2nd in London and 1st for graduate prospects. The Complete University Guide 2027 also ranks it 5th. Internationally, Imperial is 8th in the THE World University Rankings 2027 for the second year running, ahead of Yale and Columbia, and 2nd in the QS 2027 world ranking, behind only MIT.

What this means for you: UK league tables mostly measure student experience, teaching and graduate outcomes, while QS and THE weigh research and academic reputation. Imperial now sits at the top of both families of rankings at once. In practice, that is a degree recruiters recognise instantly, and a university that will attract even more applications next cycle: a University of the Year title always does.

Medicine: eleven days left

If you are applying to Imperial’s MBBS, your UCAS application must be submitted by 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, the same deadline as every UK medical school and as Oxford and Cambridge. The published minimum is AAA at A-level or 38 points in the International Baccalaureate, with Biology and Chemistry required among your subjects. The UCAT is mandatory: the 2026 testing window closed on 24 September and scores are sent to universities in early November, once matched with UCAS applications. Imperial then invites roughly the top third of eligible applicants to multiple mini interviews, and no offer is made without an interview.

Your UCAT score is already locked in, but your strategy is not: the official statistics covering the full 2026 testing window have just been published, and they moved noticeably compared with September’s interim figures. We explain how to choose your medical schools based on your UCAT score: with eleven days to go, this is the single most important call on your list.

Engineering, science, computing: 13 January, and the January test is still in play

For every other undergraduate course, the UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Be careful though: most science departments at Imperial require an admissions test. The ESAT is required for Aeronautics, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Design Engineering (Dyson School), Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Life Sciences, Mechanical Engineering and Physics. The TMUA is required for Mathematics, Computing, the Joint Mathematics and Computing degrees and the Business School’s undergraduate programme. A few departments require no test at all, including Chemistry, Bioengineering, Materials and Earth Science.

The good news if you are only discovering this now: unlike Cambridge, which requires its applicants to sit the October session, Imperial accepts scores from either the October or the January sitting. Booking for the January session opens on 26 October and closes on 21 December 2026, with tests running from 4 to 8 January 2027. One rule worth knowing: only your first attempt counts, one sitting per application cycle. Missing the October booking is therefore not a setback at Imperial, it is a genuine second window, as long as you prepare seriously over the winter break.

Entry requirements: the published minimum and the reality

Imperial’s official accepted qualifications page lists, for the French Baccalauréat, an overall score of 15 out of 20 with 15 or better in the subjects relevant to your course, studied in première and terminale, and 14 for the Baccalauréat Français International. Similar logic applies to other international qualifications. Imperial also states plainly that some courses require more than these minimums: on the most competitive degrees, the admitted students we work with sit well above the published thresholds, and the admissions test often matters more than the transcript.

For English, Imperial applies two levels depending on the course: Standard (IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in every component, TOEFL iBT 92, or 4.5 on the new 2026 scale) and Higher (IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in every component, TOEFL 100, or 5.0). One detail that catches strong candidates every year: scores must come from a single sitting, as Imperial accepts neither combined attempts nor TOEFL My Best Scores reports.
